Collections

Records pertain to the local history and genealogy of North-Central West Virginia. The collection contains articles written by Jack Sandy Anderson and research he gathered. Types of material include photographs, articles, and genealogical materials (pedigree charts; records of marriage, births, and deaths; and detailed family lists; among others). Materials of note include family listings tracing lineages back to European Nobility and a Civil War discharge of Robert Rose Anderson.

Letters, clippings, manuscript volumes, business papers, pamphlets, genealogical material, family papers, reports, memos, campaign literature, photographs of John G. Pollard (1871-1937), lawyer, educator, statesman, humanitarian, and governor of Virginia, 1930-1934. Prominent correspondents include Henry Watkins Anderson, Lady Astor, Frederic W. Boatwright, David K. E. Bruce, John Stewart Bryan, William Jennings Bryan, Harry F. Byrd, James Cannon, J. A. C. Chandler, Calvin Coolidge, Westmoreland Davis, Jessie Ball Dupont, Carter Glass, John D. Rockefeller, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Claude A. Swanson, Lyon G. Tyler, Alexander W. Weddell, and Woodrow Wilson.

Series 1 consists of mezzotints by the English print maker and publisher John Smith (1652-1743).

Printed maps, circa 1675-1918, collected by Col. John Womack Wright pertaining to his interest in military events in Europe chiefly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection primarily concerns the cartography of areas in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Italy. The collection includes examples of the work of Willem Janszoon Blaeu, Guillaume de L'Isle, Johann Baptist Homann, Tobias Conrad Lotter, Placide de Saint Helene, John Senex, George Mattheus Seutter the Older; and Nikolaus Visscher II. Also includes notebook, 1919; and a publication of the American Geographical Society, 1924.

This collection contains items relating to King William III of England (1650-1702) and his wife Queen Mary II (1662-1694) spanning 1689 to 1710. There is also research material, dated 1986-1988, relating to King William III and Queen Mary II. The collection consists of three letters of appointment to office, a commission (written in Latin), a warrant for payment of services, and a manuscript volume of public revenues and expenditures during the reigns of William III, Mary II, and Queen Anne (1665-1714). There are also letters written by King William III to Edmund Andros and Francis Nicholson, asking for their support of the College of William and Mary. Finally, there is a scroll which has the financial accounts of Lord High Admiral Russell with the government of King William III and Queen Mary II.

Manuscript Latin exercise book. English exercises consisting of original aphonisms on schoolmasters, rules of life, extracts from contemporary letters, notices of a few remarkable events, etc. on one page with the Latin translation opposite 1672-1674. 180 pp. Latin exercises done by Richard Wardell. At end of book, the exercises were done by Thomas Bullen in 1721.

An artificial collection of papers created from material acquired during the 1930's and 1940's. Mostly letters, financial records, published material and official records of individuals in Virginia and elsewhere. Includes documents and signatures of well known people, such as Benjamin Harrison, John Randolph and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
