Abstract Or Scope

Princess Anne County (Va.) Apprenticeship Indentures, 1806-1868,consist of contracts or agreements binding out white, Black, or Multiracial children, sometimes those who were orphaned, to learn a particular trade or craft. These indentures may be written agreements between the family of the apprentice and those responsible for the indentured. In many cases this includes the direct involvement of the Overseers of the Poor. They typically contain the name of the person or institution binding out, the person to whom bound, the name of the person being indentured, the length of the apprenticeship, and the responsibilities of the person taking on the indenture.

Princess Anne County (Va.) Certificates of Marriage Returns, 1786-1850

Abstract Or Scope

Princess Anne County (Va.) Certificates of marriage returns, 1786-1850, records the returns made by individual ministers of marriages performed within the county. The majority of returns in this volume are in the form of lists which record the date of marriage and names of both parties. However, a few returns take the form of registers which record the date of marriage, the names of both parties, the date of the marriage license and the date of the marriage ceremony. Other registers record the names of the persons married, the date of the marriage license, the date when the marriage ceremony took place and the name of the county clerk who issued the marriage license. In the process of preparing and sending the returns, the name of the minister and the minister's denomination are also recorded. There are no recorded returns for the year 1787. On page 94 (1828), page 96 (1823) and page 126 (1843) are noted marriages between free blacks or free persons of color.

Princess Anne County (Va.) Ministers' returns, 1787-1821, is divided into two sections. The first section covering pages 1-101, 1787, 1821, records the returns made by individual ministers of marriages performed within the county. The majority of returns in this section are in the form of lists which record the date of marriage and names of both parties. However, a few returns take the form of registers with record the date of the marriage, the names of both parties, the date of the marriage license and the date of the marriage ceremony. In the process of preparing and sending the returns, the name of the minister and the minister's denomination are also recorded.
