Patrick County (Va.) Court Records, 1820-1858. The collection contains various documents removed from Patrick County court records, as follows: a letter from Jacob Johnston, in McMinnville, Tennessee, to Thomas Whitlock asking him to take care of his affairs in Patrick County and be a guardian to his son, 1820; a letter from Russell Hicks of Independence, Missouri, to Molley Adams, concerning a transaction involving Adams' half brother William Price, 1832, and used as an exhibit in the chancery case Adams vs. Penn; an answer from the chancery cause Administrator of William Moore vs. Williamson Smith and wife, 1839; a notice from the chancery cause James Dalton vs. Executors of James M. Read, 1842; a notice to take depositions in the Patrick County Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery case Isaac N. Haynes vs. John Stone, etc., 1846; an order from the chancery cause Leander Hughes, etc. vs. John Hughes, etc., 1850; a judgment, Barnett M. Price vs. Thomas Dehart and wife, etc., 1851; a letter from E.B. Turner to B.J. Campbell pertaining to the settlement of the estate of Tennisan (?), 1850; a notice pertaining to the settlement of the estate of Jesse P. Dehart, 1851; an order from the chancery cause Herbert Shelton vs. Milton R. Dodson, 1851; a letter, 1853, and an answer from the chancery cause Benjamin Frashur vs. Robert Delop, 1854; a letter from S. Beard to M.B. Frasier, 1856; and a wrapper from a deposition from the suit Tuggle and others vs. N.P. Adams, 1855.

Patrick County (Va.) Chancery Causes, 1803-1958 (bulk 1887-1910), consists of cases concerning issues of equity brought largely by residents of the county and filed in the circuit court. These cases often involve the following actions: divisions of estates or land, disputes over wills, disputes regarding contracts, debt, divorce, and business disputes. Other less prevalent issues include freedom suits, permissions to sell property, and disputes concerning trespass. Predominant documents found in these chancery causes include bills (documents the plaintiff's complaint), answers (defendant's response to the plaintiff's complaint), decrees (court's decision), depositions, affidavits, correspondence, lists of heirs, deeds, plats, wills, records involving enslaved individuals, business records or vital statistics.

Patrick County (Va) Coroners' Inquisitions, 1793-1933, are investigations into the deaths of individuals who died by a sudden, violent, unnatural or suspicious manner, or died without medical attendance. Causes of death found in coroners' inquisitions include murder, infanticide, suicide, domestic violence, exposure to elements, drownings, train accidents, automobile accidents, and natural causes, or as commonly referred to in the 19th century, visitation by God. Documents commonly found in coroners' inquests include the inquisition, depositions, and summons. Criminal papers such as recognizance bonds can be found in coroner inquisitions. Information found in the inquisition include the name of the coroner, the names of the jurors, the name and age of the deceased if known, gender and race of the deceased, and when, how, and by what means the deceased came to his or her death. If the deceased was African American, the inquest would identify the deceased as a slave or free person if known. If the deceased was a slave, the inquest would include, if known, the name of the slaveowner and the slaveowner's residence. Information found in the depositions include the name of the deponent and his or her account of the circumstances that led to the death of the deceased. Slaves were deponents in coroner investigations.

Patrick County (Va.) Will of William Roberston, 1798 Jul. Robertson leaves his property, which is comprised of money, furniture, livestock, land, and his plantation, to the following heirs: his wife Ann, sons William, Tucker, Isaiah, John, Jerimiah, and Steven, and daughters Ruth Bryant, Mary Johnson, Prisiller Margaret, Jeminia May, and Rodey.

Patrick County (Va.) Will of William Roberston, 1807 Apr. Robertson leaves his property, which is comprised of land and his home, to the following heirs: brother George, wife Nancy, daughters Rebecah, Nancy, Ginnea, Sally, and Elizabeth, and sons William and Benjamin.
