Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Fillmore Norfleet Correspondence 1934 and 1953

This collection contains seven letters, 1934 and 1953, written to Fillmore Norfleet, chiefly concerning his work on the publication of the diary of Robert Henning Fisher. Two letters, 1934, written in French, from Albin Michel, an editor, comment on Norfleet's book, Jesus la Caille. Letters, 1953, from Hugh Foot, Governor of Jamaica, and C. Bernard Lewis, Director and President of the Jamaica Historical Society, express their willingness to assist with the publication of the diary of Fisher, mention the journal of Lady Nugent (wife of General Nugent, Governor of Jamaica from 1801-1806), and later suggest that he approach Richard Reynolds, Jr.for assistance with the introduction to the diary. In addition, there is a 1953 letter from John Cook Wylliein his capacity as Curator of Rare Books, University of Virginia Library.

Fortnightly Club Papers 1924-1992

This collection contains the minutes (1984-1992), programs, correspondence, newsclippings, and miscellaneous items of the Fortnightly Club, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1924-1926, and 1965-1992, ca. forty items. The Fortnightly Club began in 1899 as a social club whose members would take turns reading poetry or prose for entertainment during their meetings every two weeks.
