The James S. Moffatt, Jr. Papers consist of ten multi-page type-written letters from Washington and Lee University English professor James S. Moffatt, Jr. to his mother Jennie Grier Moffatt of Due West, South Carolina between 1941 and 1944. Two of the letters are undatet. Moffatt describes his day to day affairs as well as those of his wife, Leila Nance Moffatt, and his son Joseph N. Moffatt. Family members from Due West, South Carolina and Miami, Florida are also mentioned along with other friends and family. Moffatt updates his mother on the latest news from in and around Lexington, Virginia, the Washington and Lee English department, and the greater campus community. Other subjects include the Second World War, , specifically, Moffatt's son who was serving in the U. S. Air Force service and the U. S. Army s School for Special Services, hosted by Washington and Lee University from 1942 - 1946.
