Plan of a demised tract containing about 1,488 acres

0.13 Cubic Feet One large oversize folder
Abstract Or Scope

This collection contains one hand-drawn tract map titled "Demised Tract Containing About 1,488 Acres." It measures 16 X 22 inches and is on architectural vellum; no surveyor is noted. The properties of Dr. Wm. A. Horsley and Wm. D. Cabell border the tract. The tract mapped an area formerly in Amherst County, now Nelson County, known as Wingina, formerly Hardwicksville. Indicated on the tract are some structures depicted with a small drawing on the demised property. These include Lock No. 32, with a lock house, along the James River canal way, and a mansion. According to the Oxford Dictionary, demised, in reference to property law, is land that is rented or given to someone for a particular number of years.

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
