[Topographical Maps of Virginia] (52 maps)

0.1 Cubic Feet 21.5 x 16.5 - 33 x 20 in. (52 maps)
Abstract Or Scope
A collection of topographic maps separated from the J. Ambler Johnston Papers (Ms1974-012). The set is comprised of 52 individually titled maps, arranged in alphabetical order, each map (with the exception of the Christiansburg map, which may not be part of the original set) bearing a penciled-in number that coincides with its sequence in the alphabetical arrangement. The maps represent editions dating between 1891 and 1966, referring to surveys performed between 1883 and 1966. Missing are maps from an area between Floyd and Norfolk, along the North Carolina border. It is possible that other maps are missing as well. The reverse of each map contains information about topographic maps, as well as symbols used in the maps. The map for Norfolk is twice the size of the rest of the maps.

Content Warning

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
