Papers, 1847-1934, including correspondence, essays, articles, and poems by John Hart, a Richmond book seller and poems, short stories, and a novel by his wife, Katherine M. Hart. The papers of John Hart include letters concerning the sale of books and two letters by James Branch Cabell. The collection includes diplomas and certificates awarded by the University of Virginia to his [father ?] John Hart of Louisa County, Va.

The collection contains James Branch Cabell's personal papers along with materials by other creators related to Cabell. Cabell corresponded with a number of American and British authors such as H.L. Mencken, Ellen Glasgow, Sinclair Lewis, and Theodore Dreiser, as well as with family, friends, editors and publishers. Other materials of note include his manuscripts with Cabells handwritten edits, his notebooks containing information about his published works along with poems and other writings, and the materials found inside the books of his personal library. The materials provide insight into Cabell's writings and personal interests based upon the content he placed within the books of his collection.

Collection concerning James Branch Cabell who was a student at the College of William and Mary, 1894-1898. Includes biographical material, pictures, essays from the American Spectator, short stories (in magazines), essays (in magazines), clippings of reviews by Cabell, reviews of works by or about Cabell, book jackets of books by or about Cabell and clippings from periodicals and newspapers concerning Cabell. The collection also includes his first novel, The Eagle's Shadow.

The James Branch Cabell Horse Figurine collection consists of 55 horse figurines, a letter from James Branch Cabell to Stanley West (former Director of University Libraries at University of Florida), and a copy of a letter to Stanley West from the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings papers, held at University of Florida. The premise of this collection is that Cabell began by imagining that the literary characters he had created and the real-life people he wrote about were his friends, and that they had given these horses as gifts. Looking to myth and legend, Cabell next chose names for his horses from legendary steeds whose characteristics made them appropriate to the imagined giver. These descriptions offer a multi-layered set of allusions bringing together myth, history, Cabell's biography, and his published works. The dates the horse figurines were created is unknown, but Cabell stated in his letter to Stanely West that he began this project in 1926. It is unclear when the collection was completed.

Pape and Cabell to John D. Weaver [College of William and Mary]; and newspaper clippings concerning Cabell and Frances Newman.

Alberts (concerning Beyond Life and The White Robe), R. H. Barlow (concerning Special Delivery, Smirt, and the gift of two pewter animals), [?] Hills (concerning the negative effect of newspaper experience on writing), Allen Lucy (concerning the production by the Palo Alto Community Players of The Jewel Merchants and his recommendation that Simon's Hour not be dramatized) and Marguerite M. Mulligan (concerning the forged play, Poor Jack). There is also a printed copy of the forged play in the collection.
