Amherst County (Va.) Exemption Requests, 1861-1862, consist of individual requests of persons who applied to be exempted from military service. Names of the persons applying for exemption are given as well as the reason given for the exemption (mainly physical disability.) In addition, the status of the request (whether exempted or rejected) is also given, although in many of the requests the status is not present. Many of the requests also include supporting documentation, such as letters from doctors or family members which corroborate the petitioner's reason for exemption.

Amherst County (Va.) Marriage Consents, 1836-1907 (bulk 1873-1897) is a collection of loose, original consents. The consents indicate the names of the parties intending to marry. The earliest consent from 1836 includes an additional marriage bond. A marriage certificate (1859) and a marriage license (1861) are also included in this collection. There are no consents for years 1879, 1892 and 1896. African American consents are found in the collection as well. There are a small number of undated consents found in Box 2.

This register includes the name in full of the convict and whether there are any aliases, the present and last known residence of the accused, the color or race of the individual (including white, black, brown and mulatto), the individual's height, eye color, hair color and any identifying marks, the apparent and known age of the criminal, his or her occupation, the offense, the court in which the offense was committed, the date of the committment and age of record of the individual and whether the judgment was reversed or pardon granted and the date thereof.
