Vouchers for new treasury warrants from the Virginia Land Office, 1787-1948

Abstract Or Scope

These records contain printed vouchers, signed by the state auditor, on which warrants were issued. Each voucher contains the amount of money paid into the treasury by an individual and the number of acres to which this sum entitled him. The basis for the allowance, whether by the act establishing the Land Office or by any one of several special acts under which land was available, is also recorded. The records cover the period from 1787 to 1948. After 1926, each warrants include a certificate addressed to surveyors, a receipt, and sometimes a cover letter from the Comptroller's Office. Many of the warrant numbers covered in the range are not present, either because they were not used or because the warrants are missing.

Content Warning

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
