Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

This addition to the papers of the American Rhododendron Society, ca. 600 items (3 Hollinger boxes), ca. 1944-1948, 1965-1997, consists of minutes, in files and an early bound volume; by-laws; additions to the Chapter Notebook; the correspondence and memoranda of President Austin C. Kennell, correspondence of Kennell and the Chapters, and correspondence of Kennell and the Executive Secretary, Barbara Hall; correspondence with the Editors of the Journal of the American Rhododendron Society, Adele Jonesand Sonja Nelson; records of the search committee to fill the editor position; files pertaining to the executive secretary position and its duties; financial statements of the American Rhododendron Societyand the Seed Exchange Fund; policies of the Board; membership census; scheduling of the National Conventions; a video cassette tape recording discussing the history of how the organization started, sent by William Robinsonto Barbara Hall; and a file on the International Rhododendron Union.
