Abstract Or Scope

This collection consists of typescript copies of drafts of stories and articles, some with accompanying research documents, which were written by Kinney for the New Yorker magazine, 1949 - 1954. Also included are correspondences written to Kinney's friend and former professor O. W. 'Tom' Riegel, clippings, miscellaneous papers, and one photograph of the unveiling of the United States Marine Core monument. There is a transcript of a program for an event on April 15, 1988 by the National Press Club honoring Riegel and his wife at which many Washington and Lee University alumni spoke. There are correspondences from many people, including Eleanore Roosevelt and Harry Truman, sent to him in response to an article he wrote on the origins of the phrase 'No Comment'.

Content Warning

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
