University of Virginia Medical Illustrations collection, 1760/1969, bulk 0

The collection comprises mostly of anatomical illustrations of humans and animals by professional medical illustrators and medical practioners, but there is a good number of caricatures. Many of the images depict 20th century surgical prodedures; there are also physiological illustrations included in the collection. Most items are drawn in pencil on illustration paper with cardboard backing. In addition, there are some drawings in notepads and on tracing paper.

Caricature by definition is a representation in which the subject's distinctive features or peculiarities are deliberately exaggerated to produce a comic or grotesque effect. Nineteenth-century medicine provided caricaturists with a wealth of material. Artists humorously exaggerated medical conditions and physical characteristics. Bulbous noses, protruding stomachs, and hunched backs were some of the more common features drawn to extraordinary proportions. Bizarre treatments, massive doses of pills, and excessive bloodletting, prescribed by trained physicians and quack doctors alike, were all lampooned. Suffering and discomfort from disease and the patient's reaction to medical treatment were also fodder for the satirist's pen.

Jefferson Davis comic carte de visite engravings, 1865

This collection contains five comic carte de visite engravings illustrating Jefferson Davis's capture. Davis, president of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War (1861–1865), was captured on May 10, 1865, by Union cavalry near Irwinville, Georgia. It was rumored that Davis disguised himself in a woman's dress when caught. The titles and printing information include: "How do you like it, Jefferson D.?," Kellogg Brothers, Hartford, CT, 1865; "The last ditch of the chivalry, or a President in petticoats [no imprint]"; "Mrs. Jeff. Davis, Don't provoke the President or he may hurt some of you," Boston, Wm. H. Mumler, 1865; "A wolf in sheep's clothing, or Jeff.. in crinoline," Phil. Pho. Co, Philadelphia, 1865; and "Strategy or Change of Base," Boston, Wm. H. Mumler, 1865.

The Randy Pendleton papers (1967-2000; 0.04 cubic feet) documents Pendleton's work as a journalist. The collection contains three pieces of ephemera: a Klan business card handed to Pendleton, who was in Birmingham at a Klan convention as a representative of UPI, 1967 or 1968; a press releases handed out at the announcement of Norman Mailer's candidacy for Mayor of New York City dated May 1, 1969 with hand-edits by Pendleton based on Mailer's speech; a "Sore Loserman" sign handed out outside the Florida Supreme Court during the 2000 vote recount.
