These papers contain correspondence, photographs, business papers, artifacts, certificates, and other materials related to Charles Edward Gary, Jr. Mr. Gary was a prominent African American business owner in Williamsburg, operating for decades the West End Valet Shop off Prince George Street. The collection comprises business ledgers and other West End Valet Shop records over several years, as well as legal documents pertaining to the Valet Shop and Gary family estates such as leases and deeds. Personal materials pertain especially to Mr. Gary's schooling, his miltiary service during World War II, family photographs, and some of Mrs. Zelda Gary's personal papers. An active member of the Williamsburg community, Mr. Gary served in several civic, fraternal, and religious organizations. Centering on his involvement in local baptist churches and in the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World - Old Capitol Lodge, Mr. Gary's papers include speeches he prepared for religious and I.B.P.O.E.W. meeting touching on religion, family, and race issues in America. The collection thus contains materials relevant to the study of twentieth-century Williamsburg history and African American history.

Abstract Or Scope
The office files of Charles McCamic of the law firm of McCamic and Clarke, Wheeling, West Virginia. McCamic was president of the Interstate Bridge Company; president and director of the Northeast Mississippi Oil Company; director of the Sehon-Stevenson Company; president and director of the American Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Company; and a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1905. The files contain correspondence, case papers, and business reports of clients; also papers of the companies with which McCamic was associated. The papers of the War Effort Committee of the West Virginia Bar Association, including correspondence from servicemen in World War II, are also in the collection.

Scrapbooks, correspondence, business papers, and memorabilia of a prominent Charleston family that were long time owners of the Charleston Gazette. There are papers of W. E. Chilton, Sr., and for his son and grandson, W. E. Chilton, Jr. and W. E. Chilton, III. The papers of Chilton senior include some correspondence, but mostly land papers documenting the coal mining district in Webster and Braxton Counties. There are also scrapbooks, and contracts pertaining to the family newspaper business; and volumes on the education of W. E. Chilton, Jr. at Woodberry, VA Forest School, and at Yale. The military service of the Chiltons is documented by the service papers, photographs, and other material for W. E. Chilton, Jr. and W. E. Chilton, III in World War (WWI) I and World War II (WWII) respectively.

Includes personal scrapbooks, correspondence, Jackson's Mill scrapbook, Bethany College seminar scrapbook, autograph books, a recipe book, photographs, church programs, playbills, musical programs, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, maps, diplomas, certificates, and ticket stubs. Subjects include World War II and Detroit, Michigan. World War II materials relate to: Lieutenant Henry Kovacs, a soldier from Detroit; political campaigns of Dewey and Roosevelt; inauguration and presidency of Roosevelt; women on the home front during WWII, Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAACS); employment opportunities at the Chrysler Corporation; and political cartoons. Materials relating to Detroit include: race-relations, 'The Playgoer' (magazine), 'The Hudsonian' (magazine), Dodge Community House, Delray (community of Detroit), Evangeline Residence, the Fruehauf Boarding School, and Camp Kiwanis. The correspondence of Clark family members, mainly that of Frank Wells Clark and Friend E. Clark. Frank Wells Clark was a student at West Virginia University and Harvard Law School and later established a law practice at New Martinsville. Friend E. Clark was a student at West Virginia University and Johns Hopkins University and later taught chemistry at State College, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia University. Included are the letters of Friend Clark when he traveled to Europe where in 1908 he was visiting professor at the University of Berlin. Cities and places he visited were Berlin, Florence, Gibraltar, Gottingen, Munich, Naples, Rome, Venice and Vienna. There is his professional correspondence as a West Virginia University chemistry professor which covers his recommendations to colleagues, businesses, and stockholders about technical matters. Also there are presentations on New Martinsville, Kanawha Valley, West Virginia and chemistry. Included is the correspondence of Mrs. Friend E. Clark in her capacity as an officer and member of the Crippled Children's Society containing fundraising letters, statistics, organizational bylaws, and constitutions. Correspondents include Franklin D. Roosevelt, John W. Davis, William G. Conley, and H. Guy Kump.

Papers documenting Clifford Condon's career as a Navy pharmacist, especially his service and internment as a POW during World War II in the Philipines. Includes correspondence with his wife, Eva Limerick Condon, clippings, photographs, three medals, and certificates. A 15-page letter of November 2, 1944 to his wife, Eva, just prior to his removal to a POW camp in Japan, details his experiences subsequent to his capture by the Japanese in December, 1941. Official correspondence documents the status of Condon as a prisoner of war, his death in a Japanese POW camp, burial in Arlington National Cemetery, the posthumous awarding of the Bronze Star, and financial compensation for Eva L. Condon.
