Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Bessie Emanuel photo album at Hampton Institute .19 Cubic Feet Photo album 9 x12 box. 20x29 cm. (7.25" X 11.25")

Smith, Bessie Emanuel, 1902-1984

This collection contains a brown faux leather photo album (7.25" X 11.25") belonging to Bessie Emanuel. Bessie (1902-1984) was raised in White Plains, New York. She was the first Black woman in her town to attend college, entering the Hampton Institute in Virginia in 1922. The photographs are dated from 1922 to 1924 and capture daily life at the Institute, sports events, friends, and family. Captions are found throughout the album. A picture of Bessie with her family in the Hampton Institute dining room features a poem dedicated to her parents on its reverse. The album was compiled by Black students at Hampton Institute.

This collection contains one poster campaigning for the presidency of Connie Clark. The poster has an image of Clark and says "Connie Clark for president of the graduating class Economic Honors- Intermediate Honors-Resident Staff-SR.Resident" Clark was part of the first coeducated class of undergraduates at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1974. She studied Economics. This presidential race ended with a run-off election, but ultimately Clark was not elected.

The Dale Hill Papers contain recordings, notes, research material, forms, consent waivers, articles, and photographs all relating to the beginning of co-education at the University of Virginia. The bulk of the materials are the audiovisual content, which were maintained previously on and digitized or transferred from audio cassette, DVD, CD, and flash drive carriers at the time the collection was donated to the Library.

Gritty Women Podcast Series Recordings .953 Gigabytes 5 files (4 mp3, 1 wav)

This collection contains the four documetnary style episodes of the Gritty Women podcast series, by Giovana Benatto de Oliveira, and one audio file of an interview used to create the episodes. Each episode includes segments of interviews conducted by the podcast's creator. The podcast explores the history, and legal, political, and social context of UVA's coeducation, and balances both scholarly and personal perspectives through interviews with both scholars and first women admits.

This collection and addition consists of about 4.25 shelf feet (ca. 1500 pieces) and includes the legal, financial, genealogical, and personal papers of Jane Chapman Slaughter, a genealogical authority and one of the first women to receive a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

John C. McCoid II papers 18 items

McCoid, John C., II, 1928-2016

The first part of the collection has sixteen law student notebooks created by John C. McCoid II during his law study at Vanderbilt University between 1950 and 1953. The addendum, received in 2016, contains a University of Virginia report regarding the admission of women in 1968, and some correspondence regarding the recruitment of African American faculty members in 1972, and teaching materials.

This collection contains a scrapbook belonging to Joy Rebekah Kime Benton (1886-1957) of Burlington, North Carolina, an author, poet, painter, and weaver. The contents of scrapbook items are principally documents from 1905 to 1908, although some paste-ins are from the 1930s. There are 128 pages with photographs, clippings, drawings, and ephemera pasted and laid in.

This material contains images of racist imagery. The purpose of this note is to allow users to decide whether they need or want to view these materials. This collection includes a photograph album compiled from 1910 to 1913 documenting the Randolph-Macon Woman's College, now called Randolph College, in Lynchburg, Virginia. It contains approximately 274 photos, mainly measuring 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches and smaller, with some small panoramas. All photographs have numbers written in silver ink, and many are captioned. The creator of the album is unknown. This album features pasted, dated, and captioned photographs documenting student life. The pictures include images of sports events, Greek life, many themed parties, including Dutch, Spanish, and Chinese parties -- the latter with a photo of Sieu-tsung Lok, the first Asian student from China. There are photos of organized events like May Day, Field Day, and graduation celebrations. Also captured are a variety of plays put on by the students. There are also two photographs of an unidentified Black man who may have been a porter at the college. There are also landscapes around Virginia and exterior shots of the campus buildings. One page of photographs titled "Milestones, 1913" contains two photos of students in blackface.
