This record group comprises material relating to cadet social life anc customs, cadet recreational organizations and clubs, misc. cadet life memorabilia and printed material.

The collection consitsts of a single bound volume titled "Basic Military Training, Volume II" published by the Military Service Publishing Company in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The manual includes the following sections:

Special report written by VMI Surgeon Robert L. Madison on July 1, 1864 after Hunter's Raid during the Civil War., "Estimating losses sustained by the hospital at the hands of Yankee thieves and incendiaries on June 11, 1864."

The Regulations detail rules for the operation of the Institute and for all aspects of cadet life. They were first published in 1839, and throughout the 19th through mid-20th centuries they were updated every few years. In the modern era, cadet regulations are published yearly and are familiarly know as the Blue Book.

Reference file for researchers containing briefs, rulings, filings; public memoranda; new releases and newspaper clippings; and other public documents documenting the coeducation court case and the first years of coeducation.

The Cadet (originally The Keydet), VMI's student newspaper, began weekly publication in the fall of 1907. The collection begins with Volume 1, number 2 - the very first issue is not extant. The newspaper has been published continuously since 1907, except for a three-year gap during and immediately following World War II.

The VMI Archives is the official repository for the Institute's collection of permanently maintained photographs. The earliest date from the 1840's and the most recent are digital photos from the current academic year. New items are added regularly.

This collection consists of VMI cadet scrapbooks that feature photographs, memorabilia, and other items that document cadet life.

A collection of VMI class ring designs from 1927 forward. New rings are designed by each VMI Class and are presented to Class members during November of their Second Class (Junior) year. The presentation is followed by a formal dance known as Ring Figure.

Images in all formats created or commissioned by the Communications and Marketing Office [previous names include Public Information Office and Public Relations. Physical formats include include black and white and color prints, slides, and proof sheets. Digital image created by the office, as well as those posted on VMI's VMI's official social media platforms are also collected and cataloged by the Archives staff.
