This collection (11 items) consists of the papers of Dr. Alfred P. Upshur (VMI Class of 1904) whose career included service in the Army Medical Corps. The collection includes commission documents, certificates, and two photographs.

This collection (13 oversized items) consists of certificates, diplomas, and other items relating the educational history of Allan T. Gwathmey, VMI Class of 1923. Gwathmey was an internationally known scientist that specialized in the field of single metal crystals. He taught chemistry at the University of Virginia from 1938 until his death in 1963. He was also the founder of the Virginia Institute for Scientific Research.

This colllection consists of certificates, citations, commissions, and similar documentation associated with VMI alumni, faculty, staff, or VMI as a whole. The collection does not include VMI diplomas or literary society certificates, which are filed separately.

This collection consists of commissions and certificates (10 items) from the United States Army career of Edmund C. Waddill.

This collection consists of one scrapbook compiled by Edmund Jackson Tice, VMI Class of 1939. The scrapbook includes newspaper clippings concerning his high school and college years, programs, and correspondence.

The Frederick S. Greene papers (20 items) consist of the personal papers of Greene, including:

• Scripts of four plays: (1) "The Law of the Tribe" (1914), (2) "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (1929), (3) "Christophine" (1930), and (4) "We Want Burke" (1934)
• Correspondence concerning the play "We Want Burke"
• Manuscript of a short story titled "Pick Up"
• Detail study of the face of a New Market cadet by artist Benjamin W. Clinedinst inscribed to Greene
• Three photographs
• Six World War I United States Army Signal Corps issue maps of France

The Fred F. Finklehoffe papers consist of the personal papers (20 items) of Finklehoffe, including the manuscript of an early version of the play "Brother Rat" ("When the Roll is Called"), which was submitted to VMI Professor of English Raymond E. Dixon by Finklehoffe and John C. Monks, Jr. The papers also include screenplays, clippings, and scrapbooks from Finklehoffe's cadetship and career.

The Henry A. Wise papers consist of the personal papers of Wise (VMI Class of 1927), including general correspondence, family correspondence, subject files, and materials relating to the publication of his book "Drawing Out the Man: The VMI Story." Inventory is available upon request.

This collection contains individual biographical files for all 19th and early 20th century cadets; and historical faculty/staff, Board of Visitors members, and other people associated with VMI history.

This collection consists of 16 letters and one postcard written by John G. James to his friend Samuel Y. Ferguson of Witchita Falls, Texas. Of special interest is the letter dated April 17, 1927, in which James describes his memories of witnessing the VMI Corps of Cadets arrival in Richmond, Virginia under the command of Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson. This same letter contains a brief recollection of James' participation in Jackson's funeral. Other letters contain James family information, political comments, and personal news.
