Abstract Or Scope
The Armed Forces Recipes Service Cards Collection contains three materials related to the Armed Forces Recipes Service Cards. There are around 1000 cards, and each card contains a recipe to feed 100 people. The cards provide insight into food preparation and nutrition for the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War era. Prior to 1969, the four main military branches published their own editions of recipe cards. In 1969, they consolidated the recipe cards into the Armed Forces Recipes Cards, which serviced all four branches at once. The collection contains three editions of recipe cards. The first edition is from 1963 for the Navy-Marine Corps Recipe Service. The second is the 1972 edition of recipe cards for the Armed Forces Recipes Service. The third is a 1972 index of recipe of cards, but it does not contain recipes. All three editions are incomplete and do not contain all cards. The editions are categorized by the types of recipes, and each category includes a cartoon drawing on the first page and then an index of the recipes in the category. ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
