Collections

The papers chiefly consist of letters Albert Frederick Wilson (1883-1940) sent to his mother in New Jersey while a student at the University of Virginia. There is also some correspondence from Wilson's father and grandfather; family photographs; and unpublished manuscripts by Wilson.

This collection contains one notebook with handwritten notes on lectures at the University of Virginia Law School, with some earlier lectures during his enrollment at Hampden-Sydney College. These notes seem to be lectures on philosophy and ethics rather than law, perhaps taken at different stages of Epes's matriculation, with reference to Locke, Hobbes, Bentham, and Stewart. One early lecture may be attributed to "McGuffie" suggesting possibly William Holmes McGuffey (of McGuffey Reader fame), who finished his career as an educator as a professor at UVa. With various ink ownership inscriptions to the front endpaper and miscellaneous attempts at a fancy signature, notes, and scribbles in the rear pages.

This collection contains the ledger of Charles Irving Harvie, a first year at the University of Virginia on the eve of the Civil War. Six pages record payments for matriculation, transportation, personal items, and memberships to groups like the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty, were one of two confederate military companies formed at the University.

The Dale Hill Papers contain recordings, notes, research material, forms, consent waivers, articles, and photographs all relating to the beginning of co-education at the University of Virginia. The bulk of the materials are the audiovisual content, which were maintained previously on and digitized or transferred from audio cassette, DVD, CD, and flash drive carriers at the time the collection was donated to the Library.

James H. Law, Jr. papers (1920-1921; 0.2 cubic feet) include correspondence, notebooks, blueprints, and exams of alumnus James H. Law, Jr. (Architecture, 1925).

This collection contains the papers of Julia duVal, dating from 1890 to 1930. Contents include a program to the Lynchburg High School 1910 graduation; an invitation to the Randolph-Macon Women's College 1914 graduation ceremony; a typescript copy of duVal's 1924 University of Virginia Master's thesis on Jane Austen titled "Jane Austen: the determining influences of her life on her works;" a handwritten eulogy for duVal; a photograph of duVal in her academic regalia; the 1912/1913 issue of the Randolph-Macon catalog; an issue of "The Campus Quill" from Bessie Tift College, in which duVal's death is announced; five photographs of Julia at Randolph-Macon; a Randolph-Macon postcard addressed to her father, R.A. duVal. This collection also contains three letters from duVal to her parents, dated 1916, describing Columbia University, St. John the Divine cathedral, sightseeing, and mentioning the infantile paralysis epidemic in New York City and her fears of carrying the contagion if she comes home. There are also two letters to her brother, Gabriel duVal, dated May 6 and May 8, 1916, and an undated letter to Julia from an aunt. Also included is a scripture book dated 1890 and several blank undated postcards.

This collection includes University of Virginia memorabilia from alumni Malcom Lester, who was a historian at Davidson College where he was a Chair of the History Department and Director of the Davidson College program at Cambridge University.

This collection contains five folders maintained by Michael Brannon, a University of Virginia alumnus from the class of 1969, which document his involvement in voter registration efforts during the summer of 1966. Two folders are labeled Virginia Students' Civil Rights Committee (VSCRC). One includes field notes and a letter, while the other contains pamphlets, workbooks, newsletters, meeting minutes, agendas, and reports collected through the VSCRC. Another folder, titled Southern Student Organizing Committee (SSOC), holds pamphlets and essays that Brannon obtained during the summer and in subsequent years while attending UVA. The final two folders pertain to conferences organized by ecumenical religious groups in 1966, which were connected to his volunteer work for the registration drive. These include materials from the Conference on People, Religion, and a Changing Virginia (November 1966) and New Day for Virginians (March 1966).

This collection consists of the working files of the poet and publisher Morgan Schuldt. Included are drafts of his poetry that include Schuldt's annotations and edits and thirteen hard and soft bound journals that include Schuldt's writing as well as other poetry of interest to him. Also included are documents related to his time at University of Virginia and other institutions, chapbooks, and his work for CUE and CUE editions which Schuldt co-founded.
