Letters from Stephen Russell Mallory, Secretary of the Navy, Confederate States of America, Richmond, Va., to various people regarding a libel case as well as war vessels on the Savannah River.

The original pencil sketch of Mary Ann Bowden, aged 15 years, was drawn by a Union soldier during the Battle of Williamsburg, May 5-6, 1862. It was presented to Governor Morgan of New York by Lewis Post of Seneca County, New York, on May 26, 1862, Williamsburg College Hospital.

Letter from Thomas J. Woodward, on the Iron Clad "Atlanta", James River, Va, to his sister about fighting along the James River against the Rebels. "...a brief accounty of how I am getting along up here among the Rebels. The "Atlanta" has been the great stand by or in other words the Iron Clad reserve when there is trouble any where...I am now laying close up under the fire of two heavy Rebel Beteris but concealed from them by a lump of trees..." " I can see all the spires in Richmond and the lower front of the city..." February 28, 1865.

Collection of papers and a commonplace book belonging to Thomas Kelso Davis who lived in Washington, D.C. prior to and after the Civil War. The papers include: receipts; 1856 note to William Macgill; July 6, 1857 and June 1858 thoughts on "Boyhood Friendship" and a March 22, 1864, written from Washington, D.C. A hand copy of a letter to President Grant by Thomas K. Davis where Davis writes that Grant's response to a letter Davis had sent him was confusing and incomprehensible, possibly due to his (Davis) lack of intelligence, but he would "bow my head humbly, - submissively to your decree." December 7, 1870 Letter to Davis from Taylor Page, Commissioner of Bureau Refugees, Freedman, and Abandoned Lands, about not being able to attend a club meeting. Undated poem, "But tis around this heart were spun…" where "Miss Josephine A. Plummis written on the edge. August 23, 1876 (Washington) Evening Star article.

Chiefly letters, 1861-1865, from Thomas L. Alfriend (1843-1901) Sergeant, of Company B, 15th Virginia Infantry and Parken's Battery, Alexander's Battalion, Longstreet's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, from camps in Virginia and Tennessee to family members in Richmond, Virginia. Includes letter dated May 26, 1861 from Alfriend while stationed in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Letters, primarily 1867-1880, written to Thomas Taylor of "Woodlawn," Goochland Co., Va., from his daughter Sarah C. (Taylor) Hatcher and son-in-law David A. Hatcher of Missouri. The letters concern family business and reflect financial difficulties. Includes reports and correspondence, 1877- 1888, of Taylor who served as the clerk of the First School District in Goochland County.

Papers, chiefly 1834-1863, of Thomas W. Thomas, soldier, lawyer, and judge of Elberton, GA concerning his law practice and his friendship with US Senator Robert Toombs. His papers primarily concern his various legal cases, but also discuss politics, the Civil War, and other topics sporadically. Included in the collection are papers, 1834-1864, of Drury B. Cade who operated a canal boat on the Savannah River. Items of special interest include letter, 3 April 1842, from John Reeves Jones Daniel attacking the Whigs; letter, 1849, to Zachary Taylor concerning liquor seized during the Mexican War; letter, 1857, concerning a suit to secure title to land originally granted to Eli Whitney; and there are a number of Civil War letters in the collection.
