Letter from J. F. Carson, Camp, 1st NC Cavalry, near Bellfield, Va. to [?]. He reports that he is well, tired of war, and that some "rowdy boys" tried to relieve the guard but Maj. McCloud came down and quieted them. He tells of the men's reaction to reports of peace. He hopes to hear soon that the Confederacy is "free and independent". Capt. White of Warren was the successful Knight at the "grand tournament".

Letter from J.F. Flemming, Head Quarters, 49th Regiment, to James H. Greenlee, Turkey Cove Rd., McDowell County, N.C. He reports that they have been "laying around here for two months doing nothing". The Army of Northern Virginia is drawn up to battle on the Rapidan. JEB Stuart's cavalry had a skirmish with them a few days ago. The rumors of the enemy being in Tennessee are all true. He mentions rumors of the whereabouts of Rosecrans' and Longstreet's men, and the fighting in Charleston [Tenn.?]. He says the Yankees "are making great capital out of" Union sentiment in N.C.

Letter from J. Floyd King, Major and Chief of Artillery Corps. Army W. Va., to Capt. Myers, no place. He reports on the Artillery Corps in the battle of Fayetteville and on the march to and the battle at Charleston, W. Va.

Letter from Jno. A. Hunter, Medical Director, S.W. Va., C.G. Hospital, Charleston, Va. (W. Va.). to Major General William Wing Loring, Charleston, Va. (W. Va.). He reports on the sanitary condition of the army, casualties and wounded from fighting at Fayette Court House, Cotton Hill, Montgomery's, and Charleston and enemy losses at Fayetteville.

Correspondents include James Buchanan, Jefferson Davis, Samuel Houston, Benjamin Huger, Alexander von Humboldt, R. M. T. Hunter, Charles James Faulkner, Jenny Lind, James Murray Mason, William Ballard Preston, Winfield Scott, John Tyler, Daniel Webster and the Duke of Wellington.

Letter from John Daniel Imboden, Sherr Mountain, Head Quarters, N.W. Va. Brigade, to Capt. Joseph F. Harding and other officers, 31st Va. Regt. [Early's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, near Fredericksburg, Va.]. Imboden hopes to transfer the 31st Va. regiment to his brigade but is unable to do so until the pressure is off General Lee at Fredericksburg. He heard in Richmond that the friends of former Col. William L. Jackson in the Legislature urge his appointment to command the troops in the field from the North West. He favors it but would deplore any action of the War Department that would deprive him [WLJ] of the regiment [31st] and the 25th. He will place his [JFH] letter on file in the War Department as evidence of his desire to transfer to his [JDI] brigade. He mentions the possibility of a new brigade being formed of the 25th and 31st regiments.

Letters, 1862 March 16-June 5, of John H. B. Jenkins (of the 40th New York Infantry) to Mary A. Benjamin, Smyrna, Del., describing camp life and the progress of the war especially in the battle of Fair Oaks and conditions in Hampton, Va.

Telegram, 1862 May 4, J. J. Astor, Yorktown, Va. to Pelatiah Perit, [New York, N. Y.]. 3 p. on 2 leaves ; 22 cm. Astor is writing to Perit who is president of New York City Chamber of Commerce to tell him about the evacuation of Confederate forces from Yorktown, Va. and tells him to use the information as he sees fit.
