The Borland, Green, and Godwin families are related in the following manner. George Godwin, son of Jeremiah Godwin, married Fanny Green (whose mother was Mary (Giles) Green) in 1805. Dr. Thomas Wood Borland (d. 1830 or 1831), father of Roscius Cicero Borland, married Harriott Godwin, daughter of Jeremiah Godwin and Sarah (Wilkinson) Godwin.

Contains four copies of press conference typescripts of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President of the United States, during his first year in office. Most of the press conferences deal primarily with the economy of the United States, including public works projects, the banking system, and the reorganization of government. Each copy of the typescripts is 658 pages long.

Office files, 1968-1982, of Herbert H. Bateman, Virginia Republican State Senator from Newport News. Includes correspondence with constituents and state officials; bills and legislative materials; memorandum; reports; pamphlets; and publications arranged according to subject. The collection contains background information and committee working papers showing Virginia's responses to the energy crisis of the late 1970's and to Ronald Reagan's "New Federalismquot; programs as well as the state's policies on education, transportation, and welfare funding, and the activities of state regulatory agencies.

Papers, 1851-1867, of James Thomas, Jr., a tobacco dealer in Richmond, Va. mainly concerned with the tobacco trade and prices in the Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore markets. Consists of correspondence and financial papers.

Letters mostly to Joseph Arthur, owner of an iron forge in Shenandoah County, Virginia, about his business and family life, from 1801-1814. Includes letters written by John Arthur, his brother. In 1820, there were 5 furnaces in operation in Shenandoah County, being Isabella Furnace, owned by Benjamin Blackford, Speedwell Forge, owned by James Sterret, Union Forge, owned by Joseph Arthur, Columbia Furnace, owned by John Arthur, and Pine Forge, owned by Benjamin Pennybacker. William Leeper, an employee of Joseph Arthur, is married to Benjamin Blackford's daughter.

Papers of members of the Clark family of Amelia County, Virginia, dated 1849, 1889-1899, 1915. The collection consists primarily of letters written to Lottie V. Clark of Namozine, Amelia County, Virginia, by Anthelia Holt and other friends in Chesterfield County, Virginia, which discuss social, religious, and family matters, and Anthelia's work in a cotton mill. In addition, there are letters, invitations, and poems, 1849, 1890, and n.d., addressed to Martha Susan Clark and Missouri A. Clark; and Amelia County subpoena, n.d.; and two later business letters.

Letters, 1887-1890, written to James H. Painter, of Painter's Mills, Preston County, West Virginia, and Mrs. Mary J. Painter of Oakland, Alleghany County, Maryland.

Business, military and legal papers, chiefly 1774-1822, of Richard Billups of Mathews and Gloucester Counties, Virginia. Papers include accounts, land records, and correspondence and some concern shipbuilding. Includes minutes, 1842, of a temperance meeting and Methodist church records.

Letters, 1835-1859, written to Robert Blackwell "Brickland," Lochleven, Lunenburg County, Virginia from relatives in Tennessee and Texas; and business records of the Blackwell family mill, tanyard, store and farm. Includes papers relating to the lawsuit of Blackwell and Featherston v. Hawthorne; and a letter, 30 November 1847, from Upton E. Hardy to his guardian Robert Blackwell asking permission to leave because of his illness and discussing Benjamin Stoddert Ewell's advice to him.

Papers, mainly 1865-1900, of Robert William Hughes (1821-1901), journalist, Republican politician, and United States District Judge, of Abingdon and Norfolk, Va. Included are family momentoes relating to Hughes' foster father, General Edward C. Carrington (1790-1855), and to Mrs. Hughes' father and brother, Charles C. (1795-1832) and John Preston Johnston (1821?-l847), articles written by Hughes on Virginia politics, newspapers, and horses, a few letters to Mrs. Hughes, and a scrapbook containing pamphlets and newspaper clippings of articles by Hughes or on subjects that interested Hughes, as well as a letter from J.H. Platt, Jr., Secretary, Union Congressional Republican Executive Committee, Washington, D.C., to Hughes, 17 Sept. 1870, concerning Virginia Republican politics. Prominent correspondents include Louis Agassiz, Chester A. Arthur, George Bancroft, Benjamin F. Butler, Lewis Cass, Claudius Crozet, J.M.L. Curry, John Moncure Daniel, John Warwick Daniel, J.D.B. DeBow, Benjamin S. Ewell, Ulysses S. Grant, James Barron Hope, G.P.R. James, Joseph E. Johnston, W.H.F. Lee, James Longstreet, John S. Mosby, Bishop Alfred Magill Randolph, and William Fanning Wickham (concerning his father John Wickham and members of the Richmond Bar including John Marshall.)
