The papers of the President of Giles, Fayette and Kanawha Turnpike, charted in 1837, consist of land grants, deeds, and indentures; legal papers; turnpike correspondence, stock, books, contracts, and reports to the Board of Public Works, the Virginia Legislature, and stockholders.

These are the land and mercantile papers of Felix Hansford, a large land owner along the banks of Pain[t] Creek and the Great Kanawha River, near the town of Clifton in [Kanawha] County. The collection is primarily account statements, receipts and buisness notes.There are a few land surveys, entries and deeds dating back to the 1790. Some of the papers shed light on the Hansford's activities as a falt boat builder, sawmill and grist mill operator, and justice of the peace. A few letters and bank statements deal with his term as president of the Giles, Fayette and Kanawha Turnpike Company.

Historical and genealogical typescripts, clipping scrapbooks, copies of family and court records, and personal recollections of the Guyandotte Valley area of Cabell, Wayne, and Lincoln counties compiled by F.B. Lambert. Several typescripts deal with the religious institutions of the area, the development of road, river, and rail transportation, and the spread of education in the valley. Other materials deal with the frontier and Indian history of the Guyandotte country and the collection includes a school commissioner's book for 1819. Barbourville school record book, 1863, and a minute book of the Barboursville Common Council, 1950-1911.

This collection embraces business letters, bills, receipts, notes, orders, checks, and personal correspondence of John Rogers, who was a pioneer merchant and iron manufacturer in Monongalia County, Virginia, during the first half of the nineteenth century.

Letters to and from John Rogers of Morgantown concerning his business affairs; subjects of the letters include the Morgantown Bridge Company, building an academy in Morgantown, the North West Turnpike, stage routes between Morgantown and Uniontown, salt, wool, carding, the purchase of machinery for the manufacture of woolen goods, plow points, and negroes. Correspondents include John Hoye, J. M. Mason, George Calmes, John R. Cooke, George White, J. A. Stein, and G. Faber and Sons.
