The day book and papers of Dr. Squire Bosworth and family. Squire Bosworth was one of the earliest physicians of Randolph County, and his day book records details of his medical practice indicating common procedures and remedies as well as charges and costs during the early nineteenth century. Bosworth was also a deputy and county clerk of Randolph County, and included among the papers are court documents. Along with his son, Squire Newton Bosworth, the family acquired interests in landholding which is reflected in deeds, surveys, correspondence and tax receipts from Texas and West Virginia. Among the correspondence is an 1885 letter from William L. Wilson surveying his Congressional re-election possibilities.

County court records consisting primarily of marriage records and sheriff settlements relating to roads, schools, and poor funds. There are also estate administration papers; lunacy proceedings; Board of Education records; receipts and bank records; other misc. records, and an account book of the firm of Meador and Graham in Hinton, WV. There are also some papers of former clerks E. H. Peck and P. B. Pack.

Executive and Board of Public Works records of the early state government. Included are oaths of office, appointments, executive orders, extraditions, pardons, election certifications, accounts, tax assessments, proclamations and addresses. Subjects covered include militia and political activities during the early statehood period.

Official records on the appointment, resignation, and removal of state officers, railroad and special police, and corporate representatives. Archives include financial records of state agencies, executive meeting minutes, executive decrees, and documents relating to pardons, extraditions, and state convicts in county jails. Much information relates to charters and taxation of railroad companies. Also contains official state election returns and records concerning the reconstruction of the state capitol after the fire of 1921.

Court case papers and record books consisting of road reports, order books, bonds, dockets, executions, oaths and land papers. There are also wills and estate settlements, contracts, royalty leases, liens, receipts, licenses and tax apportionments.

Papers of Alexander Smith and George W. Brown. The Smith papers are letters and receipts, 1794-1814, and include a letter from N. Suter commenting on a naval battle of the War of 1812, current prices, government, and business conditions and receipts for the payment for slaves. The Brown letters, 1870-1886, concern a gift to West Virginia University, marriage, and payment of land taxes. Correspondents or persons mentioned include Alexander Martin and John W. Mason. Receipts, 1881-1894, are for taxes paid by the Brown, Miller and Co. Also included are certificates of appointment and commissions, 1858-1921, for Virginia Militia, Quartermaster General and Adjutant General of the state of West Virginia, the Collector of Internal Revenue, the U.S. Army Officers' Reserve Corps, the National Guard, and a membership certificate for the Society of the Army of West Virginia.

Correspondence, diaries, writings, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous papers of Wilson, a private in the Twelfth Virginia Cavalry (Confederate), President of West Virginia University, 1882-1883, member of Congress, 1883-1895, Postmaster General, 1895-1897, author of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff, 1894, and President of Washington and Lee University, 1897-1900. The collection includes portions of the diaries covering the years 1862-1863, 1865, 1868-1870, 1877-1891, 1896-1899. Most of the correspondence pertains to Wilson's career as Congressman and Postmaster General and his acceptance of the presidency of Washington and Lee University. Subjects include the tariff, the currency and bimetalism controversy, West Virginia state politics, the income tax, and foreign affairs. Also includes research papers of West Virginia University history professor Festus P. Summers on microfilm; there is a detailed listing of their contents, which includes newspaper editorials and letters.
