Papers pertaining to caveats entered in the Land Office. In addition to notices of caveats entered, the papers include copies of surveys, warrants, explanations regarding the entry of caveats, and decisions in the cases. The papers cover the years between 1782 and 1923, with some years missing. The caveats were also indexed chronologically; see LOI 55.

The executive letter books contain the outgoing correspondence of Governor Andrew Jackson Montague between January 1902 and February 1906, arranged chronologically. Letters were written by Governor Montague, private secretary D. A. Ritchie, executive clerk J. Bigger, and Lt. Governor Joseph E. Willard during his brief tenure as acting governor. There are also copies of messages to the Senate and House of Delegates, including explanations for bills that the governor returned without approval. Many letters concerned appointments or requests for executive pardons. Governor Montague also issued proclamations designating Arbor Days, Labor Days, and days of Thanksgiving.

The executive letter books contain the outgoing correspondence of Governor Philip W. McKinney, including letters from private secretary Cazneau McLeod to McKinney while McKinney was away from Richmond during the summer months. The correspondence largely consists of typed carbon copies on onionskin paper, with occasional handwritten letters. An alphabetical index of correspondents (by first letter of surname) is located at the front of each volume, with page numbers. Much of the correspondence involves appointments to positions or requests for pardons.

These records contain records generally related to the operations of the Land Office but which do not fit into any existing series, including memoranda pertaining to searches of the records made by office clerks for unnamed individuals, warrants, post office box receipts, unrecorded caveats and surveys, preemption certificates not of record, and fragments.

This record contains a letter dated 1775 Apr 23 from Lewis requesting instructions regarding the disposition of several surveys made for Washington but in Lewis's possession, particularly a survey of 578 acres sent to Washington by Mr. Thomas Lewis for land on the Ohio River. He also refers to repairs being made on his home at Kenmore and to the impending war with Great Britain. Lewis specifically mentions an effort to procure powder from Baltimore and asks Washington to send powder from Philadelphia if the effort fails.

These records contain lists of judgements on caveats passed down by the Supreme Court for the district of Kentucky during the March, June, and September terms in 1785, and the March, June, and November terms of 1786. The lists vary in format, but they all contain in either column or paragraph form the names of the disputing parties, the number of acres under dispute, the county in which the land was located, and the judgment rendered in each instance.

These records contain publications from various states, mainly rules and regulations for the enforcement of weights and measures laws of individual states and instructions for weights and measures officials in the discharge of their duties. Included also are two annual reports of the Department of Public Safety in Richmond, Virginia. Publications are available for the cities of Chicago, Detroit, and Indianapolis, as well as the Federal Bureau of Standards, Washington, D.C.
