The collection also includes Gross' book collection and electronic parts. This collection contains materials relating to the significant contributions Al Gross made in the advancement of wireless technology. The collection provides a detailed look at the evolution of the walkie-talkie from a weapon against the Axis Powers in World War II to its functional and convenient purposes today. Throughout the progression of wireless technology, Al Gross remained an integral part of designing and updating wireless devices such as cellular phones and pagers to its now diminutive form using microminituarization and other scientific methods.

Avery-Abex Metallurgical Collection

The American Brake Shoe (later Abex) Company was formed in 1902 from the merger of five smaller foundries that specialized in railroad brake shoes, castings and forging, as well as hydraulic equipment. The research laboratory, known as the Mahwah Research Center, from which the collection is drawn, did applied industrial research, but was closed in 1990. Howard Avery (1906-1996), VPI graduate (B.Sc. MinE 1927, M.Sc. MinE 1928), was one of the center's leading research metallurgists. Collection includes research data of the properties of metals conducted by The American Brake Shoe Company (later Abex). Materials include research files, photographic materials, polymer resin-encased specimens, publications, and more.

The Christopher C. Kraft Papers consists of approximately 28 cu. ft. of manuscripts, particularly NACA and NASA reports and documents, meeting notes and agendas, and research materials. A later donation contains the manuscript for 2001 Kraft's autobiography. Kraft (1924-2019) graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) in 1944 and went on to become NASA's first flight director and the director of the Johnson Space Center.

This collection contains materials belonging to American astronaut, Donald K. "Deke" Slayton (1924-1993). This collection contains materials about the Apollo-Soyuz Program, programs and invitations to events, photographs, a map of Moscow, and newspaper clippings. Slayton was one of the first seven American astronauts, selected by NASA as part of the Mercury 7. He flew on the Apollo-Soyuz Progam mission, where American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts docked together and completed several scientific experiments in July 1975.

The Doris Zallen Papers, Ms2018-032, contains meeting notes from the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee, Doris Zallen's professional papers, book reviews, and background on Zallen's published papers from 1960 to 2016. Doris Zallen attended Brooklyn College and Harvard University before becaming a professor of Science and Technolgy Studies and Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Science at Virginia Tech. This collection follows Zallen's acadamic work from the undergraduate to graduate level, post-doctoral appointments, and her genetic research and teaching. Included in this collection is Zallens research on the Liverpool School which providedresearches the medical advance of the prevention of Rh disease.
