Henry County (Va.) Sheriff's Accounts, Returns and Receipt Book, 1850-1861

Abstract Or Scope

Henry County (Va.) Sheriff's Accounts, Returns and Receipt Book, 1850-1861, records the style of suit, type of case and date of the court case with a complete account of all fees incurred in the case. The volume covers judgments and commonwealth causes in both the county and circuit courts. Depending on the type of case, the sheriff made set notations. With regards to a judgment, the sheriff would note the principal debt and interest, the costs of the suit in court and the sheriff's commission and bond. A date was recorded when the costs of the suit and the sheriff's commission and bond were paid. A date was also listed for the sheriff's return--when the case was satisfied. The sheriff then issued receipts to the plaintiff of the case for fees won. Individual plantiffs acknowledged the receipt with a signature and the date of the receipt was recorded.

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
