Letter to William Blathwayt, 1716 Mar 29.

Ludwell, Philip, Governor.

Notes previous report on the state of the quitrents; comments on the 2 s per hoshead of tobacco. Complains about Governor Spotswood's demands for reforms in public accounts of quitrents. Thinks the King is cheated because the Governor receives N150 for house rent while living in the Palace furnished by the people. Asks for instructions and deputations for John Grymes (his nephew) for the office of deputy auditor which he must give up. Reports William Byrd and he "under displeasure." Also advises that Spotswood and William Robertson have a lawsuit against him. Written in Green Springs, Virginia.

Spotswood, Alexander, 1676-1740.

Informs Blathwayt that deputy {auditor} Philip Ludwell II has been suspended from office for continually frustrating the governor's proposals for collection of quit rents; also suspended is William Byrd II, former receiver general. Recommends either John Robinson or Peter Beverley to succeed Ludwell.

Thanks Blathwayt for sending deputation for John Grymes to become deputy auditor, but Governor Spotswood has refused to admit him in conjunction with Peter Beverley. Ludwell comments on Spotswood's opposition to his 1715 audit of the quitrents and his refusal to accept it. Ends letter suggesting that he be reappointed auditor. Written from Green Spring, Virginia.
