Papers and six manuscript volumes of Samuel and Thomas Bean and other members of the Bean settlement near Fabius, Hardy County. The volumes, 1833-1884, are accounts for the post office at Fabius, and for school taxes, blacksmithing, shoemaking, distilling, and other goods and services. There are lists of birth dates of members of the Gilmore family; scattered agricultural records; justice of the peace judgment dockets, 1848-1887; and loose business and post office records of Samuel Bean.

Typescripts compiled by a Wellsburg local historian, on the history of Holliday's Cove and the Hancock-Brooke County area. Subjects include prominent settlers, churches, schools, post office, toll roads, oil and gas wells, floods, gristmills, manufacture of gunpowder, iron and brick industries, newspapers, Indians, and the James Campbell and Alexander Morrow family genealogy.

Papers regarding West Virginia statehood and the history of Wheeling and Ohio County compiled by Judge Gibson L. Cranmer (1826-1903) of Wheeling, West Virginia, who served as secretary of the Wheeling Convention that repudiated Virginia's secession from the United States in 1861. Series 1 includes manuscript narratives and correspondence describing events of the West Virginia statehood movement, written by eyewitnesses at the request of Gibson L. Cranmer. Manuscript authors include John S. Burdett, John S. Carlile, Daniel Frost, Lewis Ruffner, and Benjamin Wilson. Series 2 includes Cranmer's handwritten notes, drafts of articles, copies of documents, and letters solicited by him regarding the history of Wheeling and Ohio County, West Virginia. Includes one record book of money orders issued at the post office in Morgantown, West Virginia from September 1867 through April 1877. There are also four record books of 'Receipts and Payments' at the post office in Uffington, West Virginia from April 1922 through April 1944. Uffington record books document transactions involving postage stamp stock, incoming sales, stamps, canceled money order advances received, orders paid, as well as quarterly accounts. This collection also includes a 1928 almanac for Hagerstown, Maryland titled "J. Gruber's Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack."

Mainly papers of Samuel T. Tolbert, a onetime constable of Lewis County and postmaster at Frenchton, who operated a general store and acted as agent and surveyor for out-of-state landowners. Included are the papers of Zadock Lanham, J.S. Wilson, John L. Jacob, and W.C. Tolbert. There are surveys, legal papers, correspondence, and lottery certificates from Ohio and Delaware, and Democratic state and county election tickets. Correspondents include Lewis Maxwell, J.M. Bennett, and F.H. Pierpont.

Papers of two Blacksville postmasters containing mail reports, letters on post office affairs and politics, petitions for mail routes, and printed materials relating to politics and agriculture.

Correspondence, diaries, writings, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous papers of Wilson, a private in the Twelfth Virginia Cavalry (Confederate), President of West Virginia University, 1882-1883, member of Congress, 1883-1895, Postmaster General, 1895-1897, author of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff, 1894, and President of Washington and Lee University, 1897-1900. The collection includes portions of the diaries covering the years 1862-1863, 1865, 1868-1870, 1877-1891, 1896-1899. Most of the correspondence pertains to Wilson's career as Congressman and Postmaster General and his acceptance of the presidency of Washington and Lee University. Subjects include the tariff, the currency and bimetalism controversy, West Virginia state politics, the income tax, and foreign affairs. Also includes research papers of West Virginia University history professor Festus P. Summers on microfilm; there is a detailed listing of their contents, which includes newspaper editorials and letters.
