Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

This collection contains four posters displayed on the Lawn by Hira Azher, an undergraduate at the University of Virginia over the fall and winter of 2020 and 2021.The posters include critiques of the University of Virginia and the police, for white supremacy upheld in these institutions informed by Azher's experiences as a Muslim woman of color. Another poster provided protest and action steps to re-examine the case of Xavier Hill, an unarmed Black teenager, who was killed by the Viriginia State Police in January 2021. Two of the posters have been damaged ripped or torn while on display on the Lawn.

No Kings Day poster, 2025

This collection contains one hand-drawn sign on a foamcore poster board from the local Charlottesville "No Kings" day demonstration held at the Stonefield Mall. The poster, measuring 20 x 30 inches, says "No Kings! in USA Stop President Death (Trump)" and has several king and joker playing cards and miniature American flags taped to it. The "No Kings" protests were held on June 14, 2025, to demonstrate against the policies and actions of President Donald Trump's second term. These took place primarily in the United States but also occurred internationally.

This collection contains a collection of ephemera and zines that were available in repurposed newspaper boxes outside The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative in Charlottesville, Virginia. These items were gathered in intervals throughout the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2021. These include personal and political zines by Laura Lee Gulledge, Mala Leche, and the rasquache collective; informational fliers about defunding the police and policing, Black Lives Matter, and actions against white supremacy; and posters encouraging those to wear a mask.
