Special Collections includes manuscript collections, rare books, and the University Archives, as well as state, local and historical maps and photographs. The Arthur M. Squires Papers, 1888-1987 (bulk 1940-1987), consist of extensive correspondence, unpublished research reports, lectures, trip reports, reprints, trip diaries (1968-1982), photographs (1979) from his trip to China, daily work books (1959-1981), and subject files spanning entire career. This collection is unprocessed.

Blacksburg Baptist Church Records, 1894/2007 18 Cubic Feet 11 boxes and 1 oversize folder

The collection consists of records from the Blacksburg Baptist Church, currently known as Church on Main in Blacksburg. The boxes contain materials related to financial records, minutes, church history, scrapbooks, photographs, ledger books, cassette tapes, correspondence, and more. The collection is organized based on organizations and types of records. This includes the Baptist Young People's Union, Church Building Committee, Church Bulletins, Correspondences, Financials, Leadership, Manuscripts, Membership, Photographs, Women's Missionary Society, and Women's Missionary Union. There are also printed out copies of microfilm pages which have been sorted into the "microfilm copies" and "permanent file copies." Many of the documents in these two series are duplicates of the original materials found in the other series. Some of the materials in the microfilm and permanent file copies are not found in the originals.

This collection contains materials dealing with the Panama Canal, the public health activities of the Rockefeller Foundation, the United Nations Public Health Service, and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. Also includes correspondence to and from Daniel E. Wright while a colonel on the staff of Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell and at the U.S. Middle Eastern Command Headquarters in Cairo, as well as photographs from his travels.

This collection contains the photographs of Earl Palmer, an award-winning photographer from Cambria, Virginia, whose work depicted the landscape and traditional culture of rural Appalachia in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Materials date frome 1880 to 1989, but are primarily from the 1940s to the 1970s. The collection is divided among the following series: photographs, duplicate photographs, written materials, oversize photographs, and artifacts.

Huddle, Charles Ross, 1885-1970
This collection primarily contains papers associated with Charles Huddle and his son Charles Huddle who were mining engineers in Ivanhoe, Virginia, and served in various capacities with the National Carbide Company; Ivanhoe Mining and Smelting Corporation (formerly the Ivanhoe Furnace Company); New River Mineral Company; and Sand Mountain Sand Corporation. In addition, the collection contains some personal correspondence, memorabilia, and business papers of the family. Materials date from the 1850s to the 1970s.

Preston Leech Glass Slides and Cassette Tape, 1900/1994 4 Cubic Feet 4 boxes

Leech, Preston

Collection of 298 glass slides collected by Preston Leech, a Roanoke, Virginia, native and an employee of the Norfolk & Western Railway Company from the 1930s to the 1970s. Most of the slides are of N&W locomotives, rail routes, and stations. Other slides are of general agricultural and industrial scenes, and of the Luray Caverns in Virginia. The cassette tape is of an interview of Leech done in March 1994, where he speaks about his employment at the Norfolk & Western Railway Company, the Appalachian Trail Club, and the local Masonic Lodge. Transcript of the interview is available.

Shaver and Schaeffer Family Collection, 1872/1977 3.5 Cubic Feet 5 boxes

The Shaver and Schaeffer Family Collection consists of a variety of materials, which range in dates from 1872 to 1977. The collection includes photographs, Virginia Polytechnic Institute memorabilia, printed materials, such as coupons, advertisements, and pamphlets, ledgers, scrapbooks, correspondences, diplomas, certificates, family papers, ephemera, publications, newspaper pages, newspaper clippings, calling cards, pay stubs, church offering stubs, and additional materials collected by the family. The collection also has a copied written piece by Dewey M. Shaver recalling her life in Blacksburg, Virginia. The collection includes five series: Correspondences, Ephemera, Family Papers, Photographs, and Printed Materials.
