This collection contains letters to James Davy Proctor, an English immigrant living in Virginia, written by his family and friends back home. The later letters were written to Proctor's wife, Louisa Frances "Fannie" Wilson. The incoming letters to Proctor were written mainly by his sisters Harriet and Sarah, his father James, and his Aunt Elizabeth. Other correspondents include Maud M. Rogers, Alice Jane Rodgers, and Jack Phillips.The letters inquire about Proctor's whereabouts, his health, and his prospects in the United States and also share news from back home.

This collection consists of forty-two letters primarily from John Newton Buck to his son, Walker Davison Buck, starting in December 1866 and ending in April 1873. There is one letter to John signed by "sister Catherine" and maybe the same women referred throughout the letters as "Aunt Cathie" throughout the letters. The letters are written from towns in Virginia and Maryland. Walker Davison Buck was a young boy when he received these letters; the letters cover his youth from the age of twelve to seventeen. The letters are of a personal nature. John comments on his son's education, he advises him on having a regular schedule, being attentive at school, his desire for more letters and encouraging him to write more regularly to Aunt Cathie who raised him and mentioning other relatives and family friends and news about them.

Collection contains a single ten page letter written during the Civil War by a displaced woman from Georgia named Lou Lumpkin to a woman named Philipina "Rena" McDowell. The letter discusses Lou Lumpkin's current living situation in Virginia and her unrequited feelings of love.

Letter from Martha Rochelle Tyler, granddaughter of President John Tyler to her father, John Tyler, son of President Tyler. Martha writes about keeping house, the recent visit of a Bishop to the town an accompanying church service, and upcoming plans to see her father. The letter is dated June 14th, 1881, at Jerusalem, Virginia.

A compilation of letters and reflections written during the final two years of the Civil War. Elizabeth "Nannie" Rea (1850-1924) was born in Winchester, Virginia and was sent to school at Ingleside Seminary in Baltimore County, Maryland in order to be kept safe from the conflict around Winchester, which changed hands more often than any other rebel city during the war. Her writings include personal reflections on the era she lived in, and letters to her family and friends.

Letter written by Peter Carr of Carrsbrook to William B. Hare, a doctor in Richmond, dated November 20, 1809. The letter refers to Hare's unnamed illness and his seeking medical care in the "lower country" and taking the water of Nelson. Carr then writes about U. S. politics, stating "I believe the salvation of state rights and sovereignty depend on the integrity and abilities of state councils and institutions." He then discusses European politics, noting that the "late change in the British monarchy" combined with other state affairs could lead to the pacification of Europe and later states that the balance of power in Europe is gone and "perhaps will never be restored." Carr finishes the letter describing his own health, specifically his rheumatism and use of pokeberry.
