Ellinor Porcher Gadsden Papers

This collection came from the estate of Ellinor Gadsden in 1985. Highlights of the collection include the letters of Alexander Swift(Sandie) Pendleton, a Washington College graduate who was a top aide to Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson during the American Civil War. These approximately 70 letters were a major source for the book. Sandie was the uncle of the Gadsden sisters. Included in the collection are also a few items of Gen. William Nelson Pendleton who was Robert E. Lee's friend and colleague. There are two ALS of Mildred Lee to Lella Pendleton and two copies of a poem written by and in the hand of Margaret Junkin Preston. There is also an ALS (25 Jan. 1873) from Gen. Joseph E. Johnston to W.N. Pendleton. Other major parts of the collection are photographs (ca. 60), the Misses Gadsden's account books and their memorabilia from their travels.

The subjects dealt with in these files cover the general comments pertaining to local and national matters of interest as well as current legislative issues and Republican Party business. Among the notable issues included in the General Files are files of correspondence covering the Watergate scandal, the Vietnam War, and the oil crises of the 1970's.

Lapham to her sister, Amelia H. Scorah. Includes three manuscript diaries, 1862-1863, which were written while Wilson was serving in the 12th Virginia Cavalry. Also includes reviews of books about Wilson, correspondence about Wilson by his biographers and descendants, genealogy information on Wilson's mother, and eight photocopied letters from Wilson to Waitman Barbe dated 1891-1899.Other correspondents include Edward Atkinson, William Campbell Preston Breckinridge, James B. This collection includes miscellaneous articles on a variety of literary topics. It also includes approximately 25 items from Pusey's wartime duty in Germany in 1945, including eight photographs of Admiral Dönitz's surrender. Additionally, there is a typescript by Pusey entitled Theater in Staunton, Va, 1875-1912.Also contains a signed typescript of his book History of the theater in Staunton, Virginia, known as Grange Hall, the Opera House (1879) and the Beverly Theatre (1905-), from 1875-1912. Chronicles performances (ca. 700) of drama, musical comedy, minstrel shows, vaudeville, and melodrama. Includes names of major actors and playwrights of the shows, such as Warren L. Olivier, Lillie Langtry, Fanny Janauschek, Emma Abbott, Thomas W. Keene, Sol S. Russell, Frank Chanfrau, Otis Skinner, Helena Modjeska, Julia Marlowe, and De Wolf Hopper, and the critical reaction to the performances by Staunton newspapers.
