Rev. Samuel Huntting Sayre, Jr. Papers 6.00 Linear Feet

Personal, family and ministerial correspondence of Rev. Samuel H. Sayre. His personal diaries from 1918 to 1963, his sermons and notes are included in this collection. There are family and other personal photographs and many postcard and tourist packet photographs from his trips to Europe and his automobile trips from California to Virginia. Publication material includes church bulletins, news clippings, tourist pamphlets, magazines and others. His family correspondence possibly has more personal information than his diaries. His diaries are often a day by day recap of what he did, sometimes about how he felt about people, places or things and rarely about any personal struggles. The family files contain genealogical information of the Sayre, Renison, Carmalt and Morris Families. His ministry work is detailed in his letters, diaries and other materials.

Included are correspondences from, to, and about Lee and various family members; memorabilia, pamphlets, photographs, reminiscences, miscellaneous personal papers, family history and genealogy. The collection includes materials acquired from the Lee family and items donated to and purchased and compiled by W&L University since Lee's tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 - 1870. Adminstrative papers, such as President's Reports, etc..., from Robert E. Lee's presidency of the school may be found within the W&L University Archives. Newman (1855-1944), his daughter Ruby Newman Temple (1898-1983), his grandsons Austin Gerald Harris (1941-2005) and Wendell Temple (1923-2005), and Harrisonburg's Northeast Neighborhood and Newtown.

The Shaver and Schaeffer Family Collection consists of a variety of materials, which range in dates from 1872 to 1977. The collection includes photographs, Virginia Polytechnic Institute memorabilia, printed materials, such as coupons, advertisements, and pamphlets, ledgers, scrapbooks, correspondences, diplomas, certificates, family papers, ephemera, publications, newspaper pages, newspaper clippings, calling cards, pay stubs, church offering stubs, and additional materials collected by the family. The collection also has a copied written piece by Dewey M. Shaver recalling her life in Blacksburg, Virginia. The collection includes five series: Correspondences, Ephemera, Family Papers, Photographs, and Printed Materials.

This collection covers the Greater Williamsburg Area, including Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, James City County, York County and other nearby communities. It includes gifts and purchases whose contents are ephemeral in nature and not well-suited as stand-alone collections. The items are usually transient documents of everyday life and can include menus, flyers, advertisements, and programs but can also be postcards, games, ticket stubs, and the like.

The pamphlets found in this collection highlight the many aspects of military and wartime life, mainly during World War II. The pamphlets provide clues as to how day-to-day military life was conducted during the First and Second World Wars, including the ins-and-outs of pre-military enlistment, the role of women during the war, and perceived German intentions. Many publications offer insight into how a soldier is to conduct himself on and off the battlefield, including restrictions he is to adhere to when returning home. All publications are official United States issue, and are therefore official documentation of how the army communicated with the average soldier.
