Campbell, Archibald W.
Papers of Archibald W. Campbell (1839-1899), editor of the Wheeling Daily Intelligencer. A strong unionist and Republican Party member, he worked hard through his editorials and behind the scenes in order to support the formation of the new state of West Virginia. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, ephemera, and scrapbooks dealing with the Civil War and political affairs in West Virginia's early statehood period. Some of the correspondence asks Campbell to publish specific accounts of events or rebuttals of others, showing the importance of the newspapers in shaping public perception. Correspondents include family members, Jacob B. Blair, Cassius M. Clay, Sherrard Clemens, B.F. Kelley, Francis H. Pierpont, John C. Underwood, and others. Charleston Newspapers Final Issue Printing Plates 0.2 Linear Feet 1 1/2 in. (1 flat storage box)

Charleston Daily Mail

Two printing plates for the front pages of the Charleston Gazette and Charleston Daily Mail on the date of the final editions of those newspapers. The final issues of each newspaper were published 15 July 2015. Starting 20 July 2015, the two newspapers were merged into a single publication, the Charleston Gazette-Mail. The printing plates are thin sheets of metal measuring 12 1/2 in. x 23 1/2 in.

The C-SPAN records consist of materials created and collected by the C-SPAN Corporation and its founder Brian Lamb from the years 1809, 1978-2012. The materials created by C-SPAN originate from 1978-2012, with one antique newspaper from 1809 gifted to Lamb. The records document C-SPAN's functions as a broadcasting network, as well as its continuing engagement in the political and public affairs sphere of the United States.

Two scrapbooks compiled by Dennis Wainstock that include clippings of the articles/editorials he wrote for the The Daily Athenaeum, the student-run newspaper, during his time as a graduate student in history at West Virginia University, from 1974 to 1984. Wainstock was an active member of the Socialist Party U.S.A. and the Morgantown chapter of the War Resisters League, a national secular pacifist organization founded by opponents of World War I. The articles include his perspectives and options on current events, debated political issues, and the political activities of the left-wing student groups at West Virginia University.

Photostat copies of newspaper clippings from the Daily Enquirer and Examiner (Richmond, Virginia). Includes the order appointing Henry H. Wells to succeed Francis H. Pierpont as Governor of Virginia, and two editorials about Pierpont (April 6 and 27, 1868). The articles suggest that Pierpont was unpopular in Richmond at this time.

Memoirs of a retired newspaperman, editor, and Republican state house representative (1898-1901). McIntosh supported the Republican party and coal operator interests through his newspapers and periodicals, which included: HUNTINGTON GAZETTE, HUNTINGTON SUNDAY GAZETTE, HINTON FREE LANCE, FAYETTE JOURNAL, NEWS-MAIL CO., RALEIGH HERALD, and company magazines for the Island Creek Coal Company and Solvay Collieries. McIntosh discusses: his early employment on the railroads as census taker and assessor; his newspaper career; state politics; his fight against the Fayette Whiskey Ring; taxation; "The Committee of Twenty-eight"; "Lincoln Party" Convention; West Virginia Coal Association; United Fuel Gas Company; United Mine Workers; strikes; March on Mingo and Logan; Logan Coal Operators Association; and World War I and the National Defense Board. There is also some information on the McIntosh family history and genealogy. Among the persons mentioned are: Mather Archer, W.R. Bennett, William Blizzard, William M.O. Dawson, Samuel Dixon, Charles A. Goddard, Henry D. Hatfield, Bob Patterson, Oscar Price, Gen. J.W. St. Clair, M.J. Simms, and Z.T. Vinson.

Souvenir newspaper announcing the end of World War II in the Pacific published for the crew of the USS Maui. The newspaper was owned by James Albert Parker, a member of the ship's crew and a native of West Virginia. In addition to a number of articles regarding the surrender of Japan, the newspaper also includes an article about West Virginia Senator Harley M. Kilgore and the post-war need for coal.
