Primary Collecting Areas:
SCRC collects materials related to George Mason University, Northern Virginia, performing arts, transportation and planning, and photography. SCRC collects oral histories pertaining to Northern Virginia; the Federal Theatre Project; Reston, Virginia; and George Mason University's history. It currently conducts an active oral history program.
Description:
Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) is the unit within the University Libraries charged with acquiring, documenting, preserving, and providing access to primary research collections and documents. SCRC also manages the non-current and archival records of George Mason University, is responsible for the preservation and access to the University's theses and dissertations, and undertakes, through its Oral History program, the creation of audiovisual documentary resources. SCRC services, collections, and programs support the teaching and research activities of George Mason University and also serve the community at large.

"A View of the Public Fire-Works to be exhibited on Occasion of the General Peace" architectural and instructional engraving, created circa 1749. The engraving shows a drawing of the pavilion to be built for the celebratory fireworks performance and its written specifications.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts records contains information about several departments within the college itself along with many posters, playbills and class materials ranging from the 1960s-2015. As the College of Visual and Performing Arts was established in 1990, much of the collection is made up from materials from the departments pre-dating the time when the College brought them all together.

The Japanese Phonograph Record collection contains 15, 78 rpm phonograph records mostly in sleeves with Japanese wirting. The records were either printed in the United States or Japan for the Japanese music market, and released by Columbia, Ploydor, Victor, Orient Records and Regal.

This collection consists of vinyl singles and boxed collections collected by George Mason University French professor Jeffrey Chamberlain. Record formats include 33 1/3 rpm, 45 rpm, and 78 rpm in 7-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch sizes. Many of the singles are in paper sleeves and include English and French artists and feature predominantly popular and jazz music. The box sets consist of 10-inch and 12-inch records of mostly classical music. Record labels present in the collection include RCA Victor, Columbia, Philips, and Capitol records.
