Research notes, 1930-1939, compiled by historian Abbot E. Smith for his monograph, Colonists in Bondage: White Servitude and Convict Labor in America, 1607-1766. His notes cover indentured servitude in the colonies -- convicts shipped to the colonies, legal status of indentured servants and their life in the colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries.

This collection contains correspondence, publications, and other material kept by Carl R. Dolmetsch, a professor in the Department of English at the College of William and Mary. Included in the collection are publications, a drawing, and a poster related to author H.L. Mencken; correspondence concerning potential visiting lecturers to events in the Department of Engllish; and letters written to Carl R. Dolmetsch by persons who had contributed material to Smart Set magazine as well as letters received by Dolmetsch as chairmanship of the Committee on Arts and Lectures at the College of William and Mary. Prominent correspondents include Faith Baldwin, Jacques Barzun, S. N. Behrman, Rudolf Bing, Kenneth Burke, James Branch Cabell, Padraic Colum, Babette Deutsch, William Golding, H. L. Mencken, Upton Sinclair, C. P. Snow, Louis Untermeyer, Mark Van Doren, Colin Wilson and Edmund Wilson.

The papers of Harry Caskie Stinnett, William and Mary class of 1932, include a variety of different materials. Included are two literary manuscripts of Stinnett's books, "Back to Abnormal" and "Out of the Red." Each manuscript contains handwritten edits. Additions to the collection include a multitude of magazine manuscripts. Many of the manuscripts detail Stinnett's adventures abroad. Other items include a scrapbook filled of newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, book reviews, and Stinnett's baptismal and confirmation certificates.

Collection, 1876-1959, of Benjamin Curtis Chappelear including manuscript and printed maps of Fauquier, Loudoun, Clarke, and Warren Counties, Virginia; Virginia state maps; United States Department of the Interior Geological Survey Maps of areas in Virginia and West Virginia; notes concerning land records and manuscript volumes which include account books collected by Chappelear of blacksmiths, farmers, postmasters, students, tanners, and operators of general stores. The collection also includes drawings done by Nancy Chappelear as well as genealogical notes on different families.

Written works, published and unpublished, of Frank Snowden Hopkins, journalist, diplomat, and vice-president of the World Future Society. The collection contains articles written about the Foreign Service, policy papers written for the United States State Department, articles written for the World Future Society, family histories and biographies, a reminiscence of the College of William and Mary in the 1920's, and an unpublished manuscript of a novel promoting the goals and principles of the World Future Society.

This collection includes sixteen prints collected by Galen W. Ewing to serve as accompanying illustrations to his article "Early Teaching of Science at the College of William and Mary in Virginia," Journal of Chemical Education, 15, No. 1 (Jan 1938); three notebooks filled with extensive manuscript notes and correspondence; thirteen engraving plates of various sizes used in printing the article. Contains correspondence, 1854-1876, between Zebulon S. Farland and Ellen Douglas Gordon Farland; letters, 1906-1928, to Margaret (Farland) Hall, from her children, Emily Hall, Channing Hall, Joseph Hall, and John Lesslie Hall concerning education and World War I; and correspondence, 1887-1889, between Margaret (Farland) Hall and John Lesslie Hall, Sr. The collection also includes teaching notes, professional writings, and alumni correspondence with John Lesslie Hall, Sr. Prominent correspondents of Hall include Lyon G. Tyler, Thomas Nelson Page, Joseph Dupuy Eggleston and Basil Gildersleeve. Includes items removed from "The Writing of English"(PE1408 .M38 1929), a book owned by Emily M. Hall.
