The Roy Jay Holden Papers include field notes, charts and maps, and geological surveys and research results, covering the history of mineralogy and geology, especially in Virginia, including work at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) Engineering Experiment Station. In addition to detailed materials on iron ores in Virginia, especially west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are reports on mines and furnaces in twenty-five counties of the state. The collection also contains Holden's notebooks, copies of addresses and speeches he made, and records from the VPI Geology Department, where Holden (1870-1945) taught from 1905 until his death.

This is a collection of materials related to Floyd County, Virginia history, particularly--but not limited to--church and education history, as well as materials related to the county's general history and its sesquicentennial celebration in 1981. Also includes personal materials, consisting of school records and diplomas from Radford College, personal photographs and ephemera, and sheet music from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

It contains correspondence and notes relating to the histories Blacksburg, the Preston family, and Smithfield Plantation (including maps of the grounds and the cemetery). It also contains a few campus photographs and printed materials related to Virginia Tech.

The Russell Family Correspondence Collections consists of postcards and letters from 1927-1943 written by Edgar V. "Buck" Russell and Alice Elizabeth Russell Duke. Most letters were written to their mother and father. Throughout the letters, Edgar and Alice discuss their lives and time in college. The letters provide many details into their daily lives and can be viewed as letters and diary entries. Their letters also demonstrate how the family struggled with two children in college during the Great Depression.

The family resided in Virginia, primarily Bedford County, Virginia, and the subjects of the collection include finance, the Civil War, and family matters, such as daily events and travel.

The Shaver and Schaeffer Family Collection consists of a variety of materials, which range in dates from 1872 to 1977. The collection includes photographs, Virginia Polytechnic Institute memorabilia, printed materials, such as coupons, advertisements, and pamphlets, ledgers, scrapbooks, correspondences, diplomas, certificates, family papers, ephemera, publications, newspaper pages, newspaper clippings, calling cards, pay stubs, church offering stubs, and additional materials collected by the family. The collection also has a copied written piece by Dewey M. Shaver recalling her life in Blacksburg, Virginia. The collection includes five series: Correspondences, Ephemera, Family Papers, Photographs, and Printed Materials.

Topics include Short's donation of his father's papers to the Marshall Foundation in Lexington, Virginia; canoeing on the Meherrin River; his research on Patrick Henry; and the dedication of the Forestry Center in Mechlenburg County named in honor of his parents.

This collection contains correspondence between author Sherwood Anderson and family members, most notably letters written by Anderson to his daughter Marian, as well as some of his professional correspondence. It also includes research material about Anderson gathered by Ray White and notecards--compiled by Dr. Charles Modlin--documenting the annotations in the books within Virginia Tech Special Collections' Anderson book collection.
