The Norfolk and Western Railway and Associated Companies contains a collection of records relating to the Norfolk & Western Railway and several of its predecessor and subsidiary lines and other associated enterprises, including the Atlantic & Danville Railway; Bluefield Inn; Deepwater Railway; Hotel Roanoke; New Jersey, Indiana & Illinois Railroad; New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad; Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad; Norfolk and Western Railroad; Roanoke Machine Works; Shenandoah Valley Railroad; Tidewater Railway; and the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway. Included are such materials as financial and legal documents, reports, maps, construction files, printed materials, and Norfolk & Western standard plans.

The papers include correspondence, account books, essays, receipts, newspapers, and plats and surveys of the Broaddus, Burks, Edmonds, Taliaferro, and Vaughan families of Amherst County, Virginia. Materials focus mainly on the Vaughan and Burks families and range from 1760s land grants to 1970s family correspondence.

Preston, Sarah Caperton, 1826-
The Preston Family Correspondence consists of two letters. The first is written by James Francis Preston to his wife, Sarah Caperton Preston; he details the events of and his involvement in the First Battle of Bull Run during the American Civil War. The second letter is written by Sarah to Colonel Grabowski and discusses her son's (Hugh Caperton Preston) failure to follow an order at Preston and Olin Institute (now Virginia Tech).
