Land grant of 10,000 acres to Abraham Buford in Fayette County, West Virginia

Collection, 1876-1959, of Benjamin Curtis Chappelear including manuscript and printed maps of Fauquier, Loudoun, Clarke, and Warren Counties, Virginia; Virginia state maps; United States Department of the Interior Geological Survey Maps of areas in Virginia and West Virginia; notes concerning land records and manuscript volumes which include account books collected by Chappelear of blacksmiths, farmers, postmasters, students, tanners, and operators of general stores. The collection also includes drawings done by Nancy Chappelear as well as genealogical notes on different families.

The collection also contains miscellaneous manuscripts and account books. Included in this material are: land grants, 1761 and 1766, for land in Fairfax and Frederick counties, Va.; eighty-five survey maps of Frederick, Fauquier, and Loudoun counties, Va. and Berkeley and Hampshire counties, W. Va.; road petitions, 1743-1828, for Frederick County; affidavits for Revolutionary War service; correspondence, 1923-1930, of the Improved Order of Redmen, Great Council of Virginia; letters written to W. H. H. Flick; account books of merchants in Frederick County, , Lexington, Va. and Harrisonburg, Va.; and account books of the Richmond Whig (1837), the Lexington Gazette; and the Southern Collegian (student newspaper at Washington and Lee College). There is also a daybook which contains copies of letters, notes and bonds written by Philip Nelson to Powhatan R. Page; notes on the Washington and Custis families and the building of "Arlington"; and notes concerning John Randolph of Roanoke and the Underwood Constitutional Convention in Richmond.

Land grant 1743 March 30, for 400 acres of land in Goochland County, Va. issued to David Griffith. Condition of patent: for every 50 acres of land, Griffith is to pay one shilling yearly and also cultivate and improve 3 acres out of every 50 acres within 3 years. Signed by Lieutenant Governor William Gooch.

Letter, 1804 September 12, Edmund Randolph,Richmond, [Va.] to W[illiam] F. Ast. Concerns an inquiry by Ast as to whether the Mutual Assurance Company can get its money back for paying a claim to Larkin Stanard for a fire it believes was arson on property that was over-valued by Stanard.

One page letter informing Captain Buford the the pension claim for Major Quick that Watts had presented to the executive session of Virginia was rejected because Quick had already accepted a large tract of land for his services in the Revolutionary War.

Land Grant to John Waller, Junior for 400 acres in Hanover County, Virginia. Signed by William Gooch. August 9, 1735.

Manuscript copy of an Act passed by the General Assembly, October 27, 1748, relating to land titles. "At a General Assembly, ...held at the College in Williamsburg..."Includes the signature of Mary Hazzard and note that she has seen and heard the law. Also includes a copy of pages 408-09 and 426-431 from "The Statue a Large: Being a Collection of all the Laws of Virginia ...", by William Waller Hening (Richmond, 1819).

Two page land grant issued to Thomas Read on 18 September 1782. This land is recorded as number 14,340 and is for 740 acres in Charlotte County, Virginia. Survey of the property as outlined in the grant was completed on 18 January 1793. The signature on the deed, issued by the Governor of the Commonwealth, Henry Lee, is from William Price, Esq. and is dated Augist 20, 1794.
