"11033 is the artist's meditation on the feelings and experiences of Mary Morst, a black woman in the Virginia State Penitentiary in 1921. Imprisoned behind the black bars of the book's cover, 11033 centers Mary's complex life and shares her story as an imprisoned murderer and the mother of twin children born 'behind bars.' This sculptural artist's book incorporates embedded copies of archival documents, including newspaper clippings, letters, and pardon applications alongside a fictional text woven poetically throughout the historical narrative. The inspiration for this project grew from IBe' Crawley's research into the untold stories of women and girls impacted by oppressive Virginia laws and continued enslavement. Unlike most black women and girls, Mary Morst's story is recorded because of her relationship to the penal system. This collection includes original letters and typescript copies of letters Ted Barclay sent to his family in Lexington, Virginia during the American Civil War. Subjects include information about the activities of the Liberty Hall Volunteers of the Stonewall Brigade in major battles within Virginia; accounts of life in Confederate camp; information about food, clothing, diseases, religious services, attractive women, and deaths of friends while serving with the Volunteers; and accounts of his life as a Union prisoner at Fort Delaware. These letters have been published in a volume edited by Charles Turner, Ted Barclay, Liberty Hall Volunteers: Letters from the Stonewall Brigade (1861-1864).

This collection includes general tax and purchase receipts, IOU's, and letters. The receipts date from 1860-1879 and the letters from 1861-1863 when Lewis served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Included among the letters are those to and from his father and his wife, Cary Lewis. Written on the back of one of John Lewis' letters is another letter from Eli Lewis to his wife, Elizabeth. Also includes two letters from William Neay (surgeon) to Lewis' wife and mother telling of Lewis' death in 1863 from smallpox.

Accompanied by letterpress printed imagery and textures of industrial structures and nature that inhabit this landscape located between the man-made levee and Mississippi River along the margins of the city, the book's text shifts and flows with each page-turn. It pays homage to communities that have existed on the batture in homes on stilts throughout history and the liminal experience of living in a place that is neither water nor solid ground, undefinable and always changing"--Vamp and Tramp Booksellers website, viewed October 28, 2016. "The photographs in this book were originally printed in These Were Our Homes, a pamphlet written and compiled by Elizabeth Cousins Rogers in New Orleans, 1954, in an effort to publicize the unjust destruction of homes along the batture.
