Papers of John J. Davis, a lawyer and politician from Clarksburg, West Virginia. This collection contains correspondence, account books, photographs, essays, speeches, and other material. Also included in this collection are writings of Davis' granddaughter, Julia McDonald Davis. There are also artifacts, including a school slate and three leather billfolds. Barret, John S.

Journal of John S. Barret, plantation owner in Alabama. Barret writes extensively about his farm, weather conditions, crop harvests and livestock. Some entries record his hunting activites. One page lists all of the children born to an enslaved woman on his plantation since 1802. Another entry records the sadness of the untimely death of his friend, William Aylett.

Papers of Lewis Summers, a lawyer, businessman, member of the Virginia House of Delegates, 1817-1818, delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention, 1829-1830, and his brother George W., a lawyer in Charleston, a judge, a member of the House of Delegates, 1830-1832, 1834-1836, the U.S. House of Representatives, 1841-1845, a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850, candidate for governor in 1851, member of the 1861 Peace Convention, and delegate to the Richmond Secession Convention, 1861. Correspondence between the brothers is for the years 1818-1843. There are also business, legal, and family papers, speeches, and an autograph book of George W. while a student at the University of Virginia, 1854-1857. Maury Family papers 6.31 Linear Feet

Maury, James, Sr., 1718-1769

The Maury family papers contains materials documenting the lives of the Maury Family of Virginia, New York City and Liverpool, England from 1777-1977. The collection includes the letters and business papers of James Maury (1746-1840), the first American consul to Liverpool, England, and the letters of his second wife, Margaret Rutson Maury (1805-1882), of Liverpool. Letters, business papers, legal papers, and diaries of the next two generations of the Maury family, including Ann Maury (1832-1890) of Liverpool and New York, Rutson Maury (1805-1882) of Liverpool and New York, and oceanographer Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873) are also included. The collection also contains genealogical material, photographs and cookbooks. Subjects covered include tobacco and cotton trade, general discussions about the Civil War from both the American and British perspective, travel, and gender studies.
