Published and unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, and speeches of Virgil A. Lewis (1848-1912), the first state historian and archivist and a former state superintendent of schools. Subjects include the exploration, Indian wars, and settlement of Western Virginia; the Tory insurrection in the Valley of Lost River, 1781; the West Virginia new state movement; Masonry in West Virginia; Andrew S. Rowan; and various West Virginia authors. Correspondents include: George W. Atkinson, Waitman Barbe, Danske Dandridge, William M.O. Dawson, Granville D. Subjects of the various items include sale and survey of land; schools, churches, estates, comment on and description of agriculture, social and economic conditions in Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, California, Morgantown, Fairmont, and Wheeling, WV, and Ireland; westward migration [1849]; gold mining, enslaved Africans; and business and family affairs.

Personal papers of the Watson family in Marion County, including a genealogy of the Watson and Haymond families, newspaper clippings of weddings, obituaries, social and business activities, and European travel. Mention is made of coal mining development in Marion County, strikes, labor meetings, conservation, and improvement of farming practices. There is material on politics, industrial development, early iron mining, Marion county history, the Barrickville covered bridge, Beverly-Fairmont Turnpike, and the Presbyterian Church in Fairmont.

Unedited video recording, on DVD and original digital footage, of the West Virginia Day Program presented by the West Virginia University (WVU) Libraries' West Virginia & Regional History Center on June 20, 2014. The program, titled "Celebrating Two Hundred Years of Education in Morgantown," included three speakers, all WVU faculty: Dr. Barbara J. Howe, Dr. Lillian J. Waugh, and Dr. Connie P. Rice. The speakers were introduced by Dr. John Cuthbert, Director and Curator of the West Virginia & Regional History Center. The video is 1 hour, 52 minutes, 30 seconds long; after 1 hour and 46 minutes, the audio ceases.
