Letters and accounts of James DeRuyter Blackwell, Sr., lawyer and poet, his wife Judith Emma (Edmonds) Blackwell of Warrenton, Virginia and of members of their family including their son, James De Ruyter Blackwell, Jr.

Collection contains a single printed letter signed by fourth United States President James Madison to American consul to Saint Domingue (present day Haiti), Tobias Lear. At the time of the letter June 10, 1803, Madison was serving as the U.S. Secretary of State. The letter orders biannual reports of all U.S. vessels entering local ports as well as any signs of military preparations, describes the U.S. Navy uniform and inviting consuls to wear it, outlines the powers of consuls, and emphasizes that relations with local governments ought to be kept friendly.

Collection contains correspondence from 1783-1831, of James Monroe written from Richmond, Virginia while serving time as governor, Paris while minister to France, London while minister to Great Britain, from Washington, D. C. while Secretary of State, Secretary of War, and from Loudoun County, Virginia after serving as President. Also included is a penciled sketch of Monroe by John Vanderlyn. Subjects covered in the collection include diplomatic service, education (advice to his nephew), United States foreign relations with France and Great Britain; the Missouri Compromise; and slavery. Among the correspondents are John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun, Henry Lee, John Marshall, Timothy Pickering, St. George Tucker and Monroe's uncle, Joseph Jones and his nephew James Monroe.

Papers, 1795-1834 and undated of Eliza Kortright Monroe Hay (1787-1840), daughter of U.S. President James Monroe. The collection includes letters written by and to Hay and to her father James Monroe. Correspondents include her former teacher Madame [Jeanne Louise Henriette] Campan, her daughter Hortensia M. Rogers of "Druid Hill" near Baltimore, Maryland, her son-in-law Lloyd N. Rogers as well as the daughter of the Marquis de Lafayette, Marie Antoinette Virginie de Lafayette Lasteyrie du Saillant. Subjects include the debts and final illness of James Monroe, the final illness of George Hay, the possible sale by the Hay family of "Ashfield," [near Richmond, Virginia], the aftermath of the French Revolution, Hortense de Beauharnais (the stepdaughter of Napoleon and the mother of Napoleon III), Samuel L. Gouverneur and his wife Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur, Tench Ringgold, and Egbert Read Watson.

This collection details the history of the Offley Family from 1826 to 1916 through correspondences, diaries, photographs and personal effects. Its creators include multiple generations of Offleys and their associates. The papers provide insight into the daily life of the era as well as major geopolitical events such as the Greek War of Independence, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and World War I. Many of the Offleys served in the United States armed forces. The collection also includes photographs of individuals unrelated to, but, of the same era as, the Offley Family.

The collection contains one consular greeting document, dated 4 December 1899. The document is signed by Queen Victoria. The collection also contains one photograph of Queen Victoria.
