The Thomas J. Nottingham papers consist of the diary (dated 1883-1885) written by VMI cadet Thomas J. Nottingham. It contains a consistent record of the daily cadet routine as it existed during the mid-1880s and is an excellent source for information about student life during that era. The diaries of Thomas Scattergood (1841-1907). Scattergood was a business man in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. He was active in the Society of Friends (Quakers), on the Board of the local asylum, treasurer of the Colored Institute, and involved in many civic affairs. He was a teetotaler. He was involved in the incorporation of the Sharpless Dyewood Extracts Company. In the period of these diaries, Scattergood was married to Sarah Garrett Scattergood and had three children, Anna, Alfred and Joseph Henry (known as Henry). The diary contains tintypes of his children, tales of his business ventures, details of illnesses, accounts of Friends Meetings, his day to day business, a record of notable and local deaths, and depictions of family vacations. Scattergood writes every day except for a few times during vacation and sickness. His entries include descriptions of the weather and a thermometer reading. Some notable entries include a vivid dream about heaven, a description of the pain of passing a gall of kidney stone, a private meeting with President Grover Cleveland in January of 1889, and his attendance at the opening of Bryn Mawr College.

Five-Year diary, 1938-1942 of an Agnes Wullenwaber of Illinois. Brief daily entries describe chores and social life with the occasional comment on political events. There are a few entries in the back regarding checks received which indicate that she worked at least for part of the time the diary was kept. Diary of Ann Lettice Murdoch (1785-1865) of Frederick County, Maryland. She was the wife of Richard Potts (1786-1865). The diary contains a lot of entries of religious nature as well as aphorisms. In addition, Ann L. Murdoch frequently recorded deaths in her family and community - including the death of black servants - and of friends and family members in other states. She also talks about her church, local politics and mention Richard Potts' and other family members' professional obligations, like being called away to Fort Levensworth, Kansas and being elected president of the local bank, going to San Francisco as a surgeon, etc. Other topics are an orphanage and a farm that both Ann Murdoch and her husband were involved in managing.Furthermore there are comments on epidemics, national politics and emigration to Liberia. Ann Murdoch mentions exchanging letters with her African-American friends, sending a package to Liberia, and having a visitor from Liberia come to town to encourage Blacks to emigrate.Also included in the back of the volume are two photographs of Ann Lettice Murdoch and Richard Potts.For more details and selected excerpts from the diary, see folder link below.
