This collection consists of the papers of Henry A. Washington, professor of history and political economy at the College of William and Mary. Dates include 1835-1859. The collection Includes correspondence, poetical compositions, diaries kept while practicing law in Richmond, Va., writings and addresses, legal and financial papers, and the manuscript of his edition of the Writings of Thomas Jefferson as well as supporting documentation for that project. Prominent correspondents include John Moncure Daniel, William and Mary faculty/staff (Benjamin S. Ewell, Tazewell Taylor, Morgan J. Smead, Silas Totten), John Johns, and family members.

Diary of James Galt, of "Point of Fork," Fluvanna County, Virginia which concerns farm management on several plantations, activities of himself and his family. Also includes lists of clothing given out to enlsaved persons, who are listed by family group. The entry for 18 January 1839 describes the alleged poisoning of enslaved persons.

Typescript of diary, 1819-1846, of James Riddick Wilson, Smithfield, Virginia. The diary was transcribed and edited by Ethel Chapman Elkins Lau. It contains his autobiography which discusses education, his marriage and religion.

Papers of the Jerdone family, 1753--1890 (bulk 1771-1845): letters, letterbooks, diaries and account books of immigrant Francis Jerdone (1721-1771), a Scottish factor who lived in Hanover County, Yorktown and Louisa County, Virginia, and letters of his wife, Sarah (Macon) Jerdone.

This collections contains 3 boxes of material about John Millington. Box 1 includes biographical material, diaries, correspondence, and his claim against William and Mary (1848-1853). Box 2 contains engravings and pictures. Box 3 consists of papers collected by Edward D. Kingman about Millington.

Millington's papers concern his experiences as directing engineer of the Anglo-Mexican Mining Association, as professor at the College of William & Mary (where he lived in the Wythe House), as professor at University of Mississippi, and at Memphis Medical College. Includes diaries covering 1832, 1835, and 1861-1867; letters of his family members; and Blankenship family land records and letters concerning the Spanish-American War.

Papers of Joseph E. Johnston, C.S.A. General during the American Civil War, including correspondence which reflect his long military career and interest in his nephews, John Warfield Johnston and John Preston Johnston.

Manuscript volumes kept by several generations of the Macon family of New Kent ["Ingleside"] and Hanover ["New Castle"] Counties, Va. including William Hartwell Macon (1759-1843), Doctor William Hartwell Macon (1819-1891) and William Hartwell Macon (1850-1918). The volumes are four ledgers concerning farming and medical practice and a diary. The earliest ledger mentions William Macon (1725-1813).

The Maury family papers contains materials documenting the lives of the Maury Family of Virginia, New York City and Liverpool, England from 1777-1977. The collection includes the letters and business papers of James Maury (1746-1840), the first American consul to Liverpool, England, and the letters of his second wife, Margaret Rutson Maury (1805-1882), of Liverpool. Letters, business papers, legal papers, and diaries of the next two generations of the Maury family, including Ann Maury (1832-1890) of Liverpool and New York, Rutson Maury (1805-1882) of Liverpool and New York, and oceanographer Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873) are also included. The collection also contains genealogical material, photographs and cookbooks. Subjects covered include tobacco and cotton trade, general discussions about the Civil War from both the American and British perspective, travel, and gender studies.
