Papers, 1727-1866, of Francis Prioleau Lee, his wife Sara Ann (Cooper) Lee, and her family. Chiefly papers, 1830-1850, of Francis P. Lee and concerning his estate. The papers reflect his education at Princeton University and at the General Theological Seminary, New York, New York. They cover his career as an Episcopal minister serving churches in Camden, New Jersey; Tallahassee, Florida; Camden, South Carolina; and Mobile, Alabama (Christ Church); and his trying to obtain an appointment to the faculty of the College of South Carolina. A major portion of the papers consist of manuscript sermons by Lee. The collection also includes wills and estate papers of Joseph Cooper and Benjamin Cooper; correspondence concerning lands in New Jersey and Pennsylvania inherited from Benjamin B. Cooper; and the financial problems of Sarah Ann (Cooper) Lee's brother, Ralph V. M. Cooper.

This collection contains letters from Francis Wilkinson Pickens to various correspondents, including John C. Calhoun and Thomas Green Clemson. A letter dated Sept. 29, 1845 to John C. Calhoun urges the latter to be a candidate for the U. S. Senate. There are three letters to Pickens' wife. In addition, the collection includes a legal document pertaining to John Forsyth of Georgia dated 1826, most of which is in French, as well as a free order of passage document given to Pickens to visit Poland, Germany, Switzerland, France, and England dated 1860. This document is in multiple languages.

Personal and professional papers of Dr. Franklin Riley, Southern historian, teacher of history at University of Mississippi and Washington and Lee, and author. Papers date 1843-1930. Formerly on deposit at the University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill under the accession number 1533.

This collection includes membership records, officers' reports, business papers, subscription library records, minutes of the Society's meetings and debates, receipts and letters expressing pleasure at being honored by the Society. One receipt, dated December 2, 1841, was given by Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson while he was a Virginia constable. The receipt was presented to the Franklin Society [Library] by M. W. Johnson.

Bill of sale for Jene, an enslaved female child, signed by Daniel Hall, Eastern Shore, August 2, 1788; letter of C. Watts, Exeter, England to [?] concerning Rose Johnson who was reportedly living on the Eastern Shore, Virginia, May 29, 1820; letter from Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy to Frederick Herman thanking him for his favorable review of "Profiles in Courage," February 4, 1956; and letter from John Melville Jennings to Frederick Herman concerning the elusive Rose Johnson, February 21, 1973.

This collection consists of related to three members of the Fulkerson family: Samuel Vance Fulkerson (1822-1862), his brother Abram Fulkerson, Jr. (1834-1902), and Abram's son, Samuel Vance Fulkerson (1863-1926). Significant items include:

• Civil War correspondence (dated March-May 1862) written by Samuel V. Fulkerson (1822-1862)
• Samuel V. Fulkerson's (1822-1862) reports of the Battle of McDowell and the Battle of Winchester (dated May and June 1862)

• A letter of appreciation (dated September 1862) written by General Stonewall Jackson following Samuel V. Fulkerson's (1822-1862) death in battle

Two letters, 26 March and 4 November 1791 from Gaius Dickinson, a Quaker, to his son Daniel Dickinson in Rockingham County, Va. The letters concern his travel plans and religion. Also includes a letter, 1930, concerning the provenance of the letters.

This collection includes sixteen prints collected by Galen W. Ewing to serve as accompanying illustrations to his article "Early Teaching of Science at the College of William and Mary in Virginia," Journal of Chemical Education, 15, No. 1 (Jan 1938); three notebooks filled with extensive manuscript notes and correspondence; thirteen engraving plates of various sizes used in printing the article.
