This collection consists of 66 letters written by Robert Saunders of Williamsburg, Virginia to his wife Lucy Burwell Saunders (60 letters) and his daughters Lucy Page Saunders (three letters) and Roberta P. Saunders (two2 letters) from 1829-1867. There is also a letter written on May 4, 1847 to Overton Bernard, the father of College of William and Mary student Jesse Talbot Bernard.

This collection contains Robert Seager II's typed summaries, quotations and annotations about the family papers from the Sherwood Forest estate comprising correspondence of the Gardiner and Tyler families.

The material was found in upstate New York in the mid 20th century and given to Washington and Lee University Archives in 2013.

Many of the letters were written by women and some were written by Anna See's sisters living in Pendleton County, W. Va. Several letters, 1861, were written by Silas R. See while serving in the Confederate Army.

Riordan discussing her going to Richmond to learn the millinery trade and starting in business; letters concerning marriage and courtship; letters describing stagecoach rides as well as a pass, 1839, for a slave to go from Fluvanna County to Rockingham County; and a printed circular, 1870, advising southerners to take advantage of the United States Bankruptcy Act.
