Description:

The Washington and Lee University Special Collections and Archives Department houses over 1,000 unique manuscript collections including those of the Rockbridge Historical Society, The American Shakespeare Center, and the Mountain Valley Preservation Association. These collections vary greatly in size, format, and scope. Subjects covered within the collections are diverse and include concentrations in American and Virginia history, regional genealogy, history of propaganda, Southern literature, and theater.

It also houses over 10,000 photographs and prints. Beyond our photograph and print collections, which include scrapbooks, images can also be found within the manuscript collections and University Archives described above. Our photographic holdings vary greatly in size and include numerous formats representative of the evolution of the photographic process. Strengths are local and regional portraiture, landscapes and architecture, W&L University history, including athletics, and late 19th-century travel.

This collection consists of Sanders' correspondence to his parents regarding life at Washington and Lee University, including his participation in the Arcades Club fraternity (now Delta Upsilon), sports, classes, jobs, and the Lexington Presbyterian Church as well as comments on campus drinking and mention of his brother Irwin Sanders and friend Richard Gooch. Includes his correspondence during his job with his uncle, Stuart Sanders, in Richmond at Sanders Brothers from 1931-1934 with significant comments about the Depression years. Includes 16 photographs of family and friends.

Items include tickets to events such as the Fancy Dress Ball, sophomore and junior proms, Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Delta Theta concerts, the senior ball, finals ball, and Cotillion Club formal. Also included are the 1950 Fancy Dress Ball program, an invitation from President and Mrs. Gaines, the 1950 Finals Week program, the June 4, 1950 Baccalaureate Service program, the June 9, 1950 commencement program, Roberts' Phi Beta Kappa membership certificate and six black and white photographs from the 1950 Francy Dress Ball.
