Contains papers compiled by History Professor Edward Steel of West Virginia University regarding labor activist Mother Jones. These records were created to support Steel's research and publication projects. Boxes 1-8 include facsimiles (photocopied), transcripts, and notes of archival and published material regarding Mother Jones contemporary to her time. Also includes drafts of articles. Boxes 9-10 include miscellaneous unsorted research notes.

Coal miner of Monongalia County, West Virginia. The collection includes pay envelopes and records from the Rosedale Coal Co., Connellsville By-Product Coal Corp. and Kelley's Creek Colliery Co. There also are certificates of appointment for a second-class mine foreman and a check weighman, an official tally sheet for a UMWA election, bylaws of the Mountaineer Craftsmen's Cooperative Association, a grievance blank, production statistics (1920-1921) for the Rosedale Coal Co.'s No.2 mine, and class notes and course material (1928) from a West Virginia University Mining Extension Course.

Memoirs of a retired newspaperman, editor, and Republican state house representative (1898-1901). McIntosh supported the Republican party and coal operator interests through his newspapers and periodicals, which included: HUNTINGTON GAZETTE, HUNTINGTON SUNDAY GAZETTE, HINTON FREE LANCE, FAYETTE JOURNAL, NEWS-MAIL CO., RALEIGH HERALD, and company magazines for the Island Creek Coal Company and Solvay Collieries. McIntosh discusses: his early employment on the railroads as census taker and assessor; his newspaper career; state politics; his fight against the Fayette Whiskey Ring; taxation; "The Committee of Twenty-eight"; "Lincoln Party" Convention; West Virginia Coal Association; United Fuel Gas Company; United Mine Workers; strikes; March on Mingo and Logan; Logan Coal Operators Association; and World War I and the National Defense Board. There is also some information on the McIntosh family history and genealogy. Among the persons mentioned are: Mather Archer, W.R. Bennett, William Blizzard, William M.O. Correspondence and photographs used by Lee, who was a lawyer and attorney general of West Virginia, in the writing of his book, BLOODLETTING IN APPALACHIA, 1969, concerning the coalfields of West Virginia and the attempts by miners to unionize. The photographs show individuals, coal camps, mine guards, and scenes from the Paint Creek-Cabin Creek area in 1912-1913, Matewan, and Monongalia County during the 1925-1929 period. Correspondents include Gordon C. Felts, Coleman A. Hatfield, Henry D. Hatfield, Chapman Revercomb, and Walter R. Thurmond.

Transcript of an interview by Richard Hadsell with Major W.P. Tams, Jr., former mine operator in the Winding Gulf coal mining region. Tams discusses his early days in coal mining, the opening of the Kanawha coal region, and coal operators and union officials such as: E.J. Berwind, Joe Beury, George Collins, Jarius Collins, Justus Collins, John J. Cornwell, Samuel Dixon, Elias Hatfield, Troy Hatfield, Isaac Mann, S.T. Patterson, J.A. Renahan, James O. Watts, and George Wolfe. Other individuals mentioned include: Henry D. Hatfield, John L. Lewis, John Mitchell, Fred Mooney, Bob Patterson, and "Mother" Mary Jones. Tams also discusses the Winding Gulf Collieries, the Beaver Coal Co., the Smokeless Coal Field, the N&W Railroad, the C&O Railroad, the Virginian Railroad, Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, unions and strikes, racial relations, blacks, scrip, company stores, Atwater, and Castner, Curran and Bullitt.

Letter from Mary "Mother" Jones to T.V. Powderly, Department of Labor, Washington, D.C. "Mother" Jones introduces Fred Mooney, secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers, District 17, asks Powderly to get him a passport, and says she does not know when she will leave for Mexico.

The collection consists of: a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings on the explosion at Monongah Mines No.6 and No.8 on 6 December 1907, rescue operations, the inquest, and mine law reforms; photographs of the disaster; maps of the interior of the mines; printed and typescript reports and pamphlets on mining operations; script of a 1952 television broadcast on the disaster; material on mine disasters in Alabama, Pennsylvania, and Illinois; and newspaper accounts of the agitation for the removal of Judge Alston G. Dayton; and on the imprisonment of Miss Fannie Sellins, a labor organizer.
